What Do Ignition Coils Do on a Car?

What do ignition coils do on a car?

If you’ve ever owned a vehicle that has over 150,000 kms on it, you know that things like spark plugs and ignition coils tend to need replacing around that mileage. Which leaves many people wondering, “what do ignition coils do on a car?”.

Because unless you’ve ever had to replace them, most people wouldn’t think to ask that question. And usually when you are advised that you need to do them, and find out the price, you start to assess how badly they need to be done. And what they even do.

Today’s blog post will answer the questions, “what do ignition coils do on a car?”, address the need to replace them, the average costs associated with them, and many other useful bits of information.

What Are Ignition Coils on a Car?

Aging Ignition Coils

Knowing what ignition coils do on a car starts with knowing what exactly they are. Because while many car parts and components may be self-explanatory, ignition coils are considerably more vague.

Ignition coils are key components in a car’s ignition system. Essentially, their job is to take the car battery’s low voltage and transform it into the thousands of volts needed to create a spark in the spark plugs.

That spark ignites the air-fuel mixture inside each cylinder, which is what makes the engine run. Think of it as the heart of your vehicle (And we all know how important our heart is).

How Do You Know If Your Ignition Coils Are Bad?

car-breakdown

Just like any other vehicle part, component, or system, you’ll have definitely signs and symptoms when your ignition coils are failing or have failed.

And knowing the signs is imperative because if you don’t replace your engine coils in a reasonable amount of time, you could experience issues that have the potential to cause real engine damage.

Signs Your Ignition Coils Are Bad Include:

  • Rough idling
  • Hard starts
  • Loss of power/overall performance
  • Engine misfiring
  • Poor or slowly worsening gas mileage
  • Check engine light illuminated
  • Sputtering, shuddering, or vibrations

The above noted signs and symptoms can also mimic other more severe problems. So, before diagnosing your vehicle’s issues yourself, be sure to visit a professional car mechanic like the good people at Two Brothers Automotive Service in North Vancouver.

How Much Does It Cost to Repair Bad Ignition Coils on a Car?

The cost associated with replacing faulty ignition coils can vary greatly. You could be looking at a couple hundred dollars, or up to $1000, depending on the type of vehicle that you drive.

A smaller domestic car is usually cheaper to repair than an import or luxury sedan. Prices ranger between $200 – $500 for ignition coils. Moreover, an SUV or crossover will be more expensive to replace the ignition coils on because the cost of each coil is higher.

Additionally, the cost will also depend on how many ignition coils you have. And also, whether or not your car requires a coil pack, rather than individual ignition coils.

How Do I Know If My Car Is Misfiring?

cash-for-cars-with-mechanical-issues

An engine misfire occurs when one or more cylinders fail to ignite properly, causing rough performance and potential damage if left untreated. Recognizing the symptoms early can help prevent costly repairs.

Common Signs of an Engine Misfire Include:

  • Rough idling: The engine shakes or vibrates noticeably while stationary.
  • Loss of power: Acceleration feels weak or uneven.
  • Check engine light: Often illuminates due to misfire detection.
  • Unusual sounds: Popping, sputtering, or backfiring noises from the exhaust.
  • Poor fuel economy: Increased fuel consumption due to inefficient combustion.
  • Difficulty starting: The engine may struggle to start or stall unexpectedly.

A misfiring engine might make you feel uneasy when you experience a sudden loss of power and notice that your monthly fuel costs are rising.

However, there are many other more catastrophic factors that can happen if you know your engine is misfiring and fail to do the repairs required to fix it.

What Happens If You Don’t Fix a Misfiring Engine?

Long term damage is one of the most prevalent issues that you’ll experience if you fail to repair an engine that is misfiring, no matter what the root cause is of those misfires.

If You Don’t Fix a Misfiring Engine, You Could Experience:

  • Catalytic converter damage
  • Increased emissions
  • Severe engine damage requiring replacement
  • Ignition system failure
  • Fuel system issues and/or failure

If your catalytic converter gets damaged, it can cost thousands of dollars to repair. The same goes for needing an engine replacement.

It could cost most than what your vehicle might actually be worth currently. Which is why many people consider scrapping their vehicle with More Cash For Scrap instead when repairs like this are needed.

How Much Will It Cost to Replace My Ignition Coils?

Cash for scrap cars

On a economy SUV, you’re looking at between $600 – $900 just for the ignition coils. This is mostly due to a markup on car parts. However, there is usually a half an hour to an hour of labour involved as well.

What’s more is that if you need to replace the spark plugs at the same time, you’ll be looking at an additional $200, on average. Once again, this will depend on the type of vehicle you drive, and whether or not they need to even replace the spark plugs.

Due to the price variances, many BC residents choose to scrap their car with More Cash For Scrap instead of replacing their spark plugs and coils. Because if you drive a vehicle only worth about $1000, it’s not worth it to put $1000 into it just to change some coils.

Why Do They Change Spark Plugs When Changing Ignition Coils?

A common replacement that is done when a vehicle’s ignition coils get replaced are the spark plugs. This is commonly done because the two components work synergistically together to ignite the air-fuel mixture in your engine’s cylinders.

Spark plugs and ignition coils work together to ignite the air-fuel mixture in an engine’s cylinders. The ignition coil converts the car’s low-voltage electricity from the battery into a high-voltage current. This high voltage is then sent to the spark plug, which creates a spark across its small gap.

The spark ignites the compressed air-fuel mixture, producing the combustion that powers the engine. Each ignition coil and spark plug must function precisely and in sync for efficient engine performance, fuel economy, and smooth vehicle operation.

What Is a Rebuilt Status on a Car?

Scrap car removal for Hyundais

Today’s blog post will cover some of the different statuses used to describe the state of a vehicle. And we’ll answer one of the most commonly asked questions in the used car buying industry, “what is a rebuilt status on a car?”.

The term rebuilt can be intimidating. However, it’s not as ominous as it first appears. Because a rebuilt title can mean a wide variety of things. Particularly in this day and age where the price of anything always seems to be on the rise.

We’ll explore why vehicles get deemed as rebuilt, what’s involved with buying a rebuilt car, and whether or not it’s a sensible investment. We composed today’s blog post based off of our own experiences as a professional scrap car removal company in Metro Vancouver.

Why Does It Mean When a Car Has a Rebuilt Status?

For anyone considering buying a used vehicle, you’ll notice that you come across a lot of different terms that explain the condition of the vehicle.

Great, good fair, poor, are all terms used to describe what state the vehicle is. And they are self-explanatory.

However,” rebuilt” is a common, but vague description of an automobile. And one that really needs elaboration to avoid purchasing a lemon.

Rebuilt Status Definition Canada

Cash for scrap cars Vancouver

In British Columbia, a vehicle with “rebuilt” status means that it was previously written off by ICBC and has since been rebuilt to be roadworthy.

And in order to get that status, it must meet certain standards and specifications that comply with certain criteria as set out by ICBC.

Typically, a vehicle will be deemed a “total loss” by ICBC before becoming a rebuilt vehicle. And this can occur for a variety of reasons.

What Causes a Car to Be Deemed “Rebuilt”?

It’s a common misconception that a “rebuilt” vehicle has been totaled in a major collision. Because nowadays, vehicles can be written off for a variety of reasons. And with the cost of everything going up constantly, it doesn’t take much to write off a car these days.

Reasons a Vehicle May Get Written Off Include:

  • Vandalism damage
  • Collision damage
  • Structural damage from improper modifications
  • Major glass damage
  • Significant interior damage
  • Minor repairs covered by insurance, but huge depreciation
  • Unrecovered theft

As you can see, a variety of issues can lead a vehicle into the total loss category. And something less damaging, such as vandalism, can greatly reduce the cost to buy a vehicle once repaired, with minimal damage being the cause of its rebuilt status.

Rebuilt Status Meaning in BC

cash for scrap cars

Many used car dealerships, new car dealerships, and even some repair shops will invest the time and money to get the vehicle to a point where it can be resold again.

However, the repairs can be complex, depending on why it was written off by ICBC.

And the vehicle must pass an ICBC vehicle inspection that ensures the automobile is entirely mechanically and structurally sound before it can be resold.

What’s Required to Get a Vehicle to Rebuilt Status?

After a vehicle is written off by ICBC, it can be resold and reinsured once repaired to certain standards.

And while the repairs will naturally vary vehicle to vehicle, damage to damage, the standards that are set out in British Columbia are the same.

Rebuilt Status Requirements Include:

  • The vehicle must be repaired to a roadworthy standard: structural integrity, safety systems (airbags, seat belts), mechanical systems.
  • It must pass inspections mandated by the provincial authority. For example, in British Columbia, a “Private Vehicle Inspection (PVI)” and a structural inspection for vehicles formerly with salvage status.
  • Documentation is often required: photos of damage, receipts for parts, proof the rebuild was done properly.
  • Once approved, the title/ownership record is updated to show “rebuilt” (or equivalent) and the car can be registered, licensed, and driven like any other vehicle (though with disclosure).

In many cases with slightly older vehicles, the rebuilt version is almost, if not, better than the previous one. Because aging and older vehicles can usually have issues related to things other than the damage that causes it to be written off. And these issues will usually be addressed before inspection.

Are Rebuilt Cars Good to Buy?

Cash for Rebuilt Cars

Rebuilt vehicles offer consumers a potentially great vehicle at extraordinary savings. Because you can get a vehicle that is much newer, at about half to a third of its usual cost.

Additionally, rebuilt vehicles are under the microscope when it comes to repairs. Because in order to be resold or insured again, the vehicle must pass stringent BC vehicle inspection standards.

This can often lead to a better vehicle than it once was. Because when vehicles are mass produced, there is a lot of room for error. The errors lead to recalls, safety issues, and even poor vehicle reliability and performance.

However, when a vehicle gets rebuilt, in some cases, it can be even better than it was before it was written off, depending on the condition of the car before it was deemed a total loss.

ICBC Status Definitions

Aside from the term “rebuilt”, you’ve probably also heard of “salvage” status, or “altered” status. And these, just like rebuilt all infer a specific designation, depending on what condition the vehicle is or was in when it was assessed by ICBC.

Altered Status

An altered vehicle status designation is usually assigned to a vehicle that has been modified after it was produced or manufactured by the company that made it. And this is usually only assigned to a vehicle when certain modifications have been made.

Any modification that impacts the structural integrity of a vehicle is subject to being titled as altered. This can include a variety of changes. But the most common ones are:

  • Converting a vehicle from one fuel source to another
  • Modifications to the chassis
  • Excessive suspension adjustments or “lifts”
  • When a vehicle is “homemade” or has combined at least two different vehicle types together
  • Modified or home-built vehicles will only acquire an altered status designation one it has passed the BC vehicle inspection requirements.

If there are any issues found during inspection, the owner will be required to rectify them and bring their vehicle for inspection again.

Salvage Status

Salvage Car

This is a designation we see a lot in the scrap car removal industry. Because when you’ve spent over 30 years scrapping cars for cash in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, salvage vehicles are a daily occurrence.

A salvage status designation is usually the preliminary title for vehicles that are then later considered rebuilt by ICBC.

Because a salvage title means that the vehicle is a total loss. And this is the first stage of becoming a rebuilt car later. All a salvage title means is that the vehicle has the potential to be fixed and roadworthy again.

Non-Repairable Status

Cash for cars in Langley

This title is pretty self-explanatory, but we will still elaborate. A non-repairable title is assigned to a vehicle that has catastrophic damage that will never be able to be repaired.

This is typical for vehicles that have bent frames in particular. Which is something we see quite often in the scrap car removal industry. Particularly with older or aging vehicles, or newer vehicles that were involved in a major collision.

These vehicles will never be allowed back on the road again. They cannot be insured or repaired, even if significant repairs are completed on the vehicle. Because of potential safety issues, no amount of repairs will get these vehicles back on the road again.

Why Is My Car Shaking?

Why is my car shaking

For those of you who drive an aging vehicle, a high mileage vehicle, or drive a vehicle that you purchased used recently, you’ll want to read this blog post. Because one of the most commonly asked question for people in these situations is, “why is my car shaking?”.

It can suddenly come on out of the blue, or it can start as a slight vibration, and slowly worsen over time.

Additionally, it could have been present at the time that you bought your vehicle if you purchased used. However, the issue that the previous owner thought it was might not actually be the problem.

What Makes a Car Suddenly Shake?

scrap cars for cash

Most vehicles don’t typically start shaking suddenly and without warning. That’s not to say that it doesn’t happen at all, but it’s just not as common as a progressive shake that has evolved over time.

From bad brakes to a faulty sway bar to even something as simple as tire or wheel damage; we’ll discuss in detail what the most common causes of a car shaking are and what to do about it in today’s blog post.

We are a professional scrap car removal company that has been buying scrap cars across the Lower Mainland since 2005. We have seen and hear it all when it comes to mechanical failures and defects. And today, we’ll share some of the knowledge and experience with you.

What Is My Car Shaking When Driving?

When it comes to shaking on a vehicle, it’s not so much the severity of the shake that helps a mechanic determine what is causing it, as it is when the shake is happening.

Because if your vehicle is shaking only when you brake, that could signal worn, damaged, or malfunctioning brake systems.

But if your vehicle is shaking when you accelerate, that could imply that the transmission is struggling, the engine isn’t secure, and a whole host of other problems.

The Most Common Causes of Car Vibrations

With such a plethora of causes of vehicle vibrations, shaking, and shuddering, we’ve broken down which issues you may be experiencing, and what can cause it below.

1. Car Shaking When Idling

Wheel pulling

Aging vehicles, like the ones we buy across the Lower Mainland, have a natural tendency to shake or vibrate when idling.

This is due in part to worn engine components and tired transmissions, but it can also signal a deeper and more costly repair that is on the horizon.

The Most Common Causes of Your Car Shaking When Idling Include:

  • Loose or damaged engine mounts
  • Malfunctioning idle control valve
  • Miscellaneous vacuum leaks
  • Worn spark plugs (should be changed approximately every 150,000 kms)
  • Failing fuel pump
  • Malfunction throttle position sensor
  • Dirty fuel injectors
  • Damaged or worn belts
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Faulty camshaft timing

As you can see, there are many different reasons that your vehicle will shake, shuddering, or vibrate while sitting at idle. It could be something minor, or something more in depth.

The best way to determine what you’re dealing with is to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic like the good people at Hudson Automotive in Langley, BC.

2. Car Shaking When Accelerating

Car shaking while driving

If the shaking you’re feeling only happens when you’re accelerating, it could be one of several different causes. And these issues are particularly common amongst older or high mileage vehicles.

Possible Causes of Car Shaking When Accelerating Include:

  • Wheels not balanced
  • CV joint damage or failure
  • Engine issues like misfires or worn engine mounts
  • Driveshaft malfunction
  • Failing transmission
  • Damaged tires or wheels (or both)
  • Suspension issues
  • Sway bar issues

The most common problems we see as a scrap car buyer that cause vehicle vibration or shaking when accelerating are failing transmissions, failing engines, or suspension problems.

And when that happens on an older vehicle, many Lower Mainland residents turn to the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap instead of doing a costly repair.

3. Car Shaking When Braking

Braking

If you’re noticing that your vehicle is shaking when you’re braking, the most likely cause is, you guessed it, your brakes!

Because any issue that happens when you apply the brake, typically means that something within your brake system is malfunctioning or failing. And the most common cause of shaking when braking on a car is bad, worn, or damaged rotors.

Additionally, it can also be due some of the following:

  • Extremely worn brake pads
  • Suspension issues
  • A poor wheel alignment
  • A seized brake caliper
  • Tires with cupping, bulging, or minimal tread

If your vehicle is shaking when braking, the cost to repair it is likely more inexpensive than if it were shaking upon acceleration or idle.

However, complete brake jobs or major suspension work can be costly in some cases, depending on the type of vehicle you drive, and its age.

4. Car Shaking When I Turn

scrap-car-buyers

If you’re noticing that your vehicle shakes when you’re turning corners, it could be something as simple as a bumpy road, unfilled potholes, or even the desperate need for a wheel alignment.

However, it could also signal a much bigger issue, or multiple issues, that need to be properly addressed by a professional mechanic.

Most Common Causes of Car Shaking When Turning Include:

  • Suspension problems
  • Damaged, worn, or over inflated tires
  • Damaged wheels
  • Failing CV axle
  • Poor wheel alignment
  • Limited or no traction (on slippery roads)
  • Steering system malfunction
  • Extremely bumpy roadways

No matter what the reason for your vehicle shaking, it’s always a good idea to have it inspected by professional to rule out any potential safety risks.

This is especially common with older vehicles or vehicles with high mileage. Which is why many Lower Mainland residents choose to scrap their car with us instead of doing costly repairs.

What Do Tie Rods Do?

What Do Tie Rods Do?

For those who aren’t familiar with the complex mechanics and inner workings of vehicles, mechanic lingo can be confusing to say the least.

Because when our mechanic shares with us any newfound issues, they typically refer to specific parts, and what the defect or malfunction is.

However, for those who don’t know what, say, a tie rod is, it can leave you in the lurch. So, what do tie rods do anyways? That’s what we’ll be covering in today’s blog post.

What Are Tie Rods for on a Car?

We’ll explain what role the tie rods play in keeping your vehicle on the road. We’ll also get into what to do if you need new tie rods on an aging vehicle.

More Cash For Scrap has been scrapping cars for MORE cash across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley since 2005.

Our blog posts offer solutions to common problems, insight into what to do about those problems and why they happen, and what to do if repairing them isn’t a practical resolution.

What Do Tie Rods Do On a Car?

Cash for cars with bad tie rods

Tie rods are critical components in a vehicle’s steering and suspension system, serving as the vital link between the steering rack and the steering knuckle on each front wheel. Their primary function is to transmit force from the steering center to the wheels, enabling the driver to control the direction of the vehicle.

When the steering wheel is turned, the motion is transferred through the steering column to the rack and pinion or steering gearbox, which then pushes or pulls the tie rods. These rods, in turn, pivot the wheels left or right, allowing for precise directional control.

Tie rods consist of two main parts: the inner tie rod, which connects to the steering rack, and the outer tie rod, which connects to the steering knuckle. The outer tie rod end typically includes a ball joint that allows for smooth movement and flexibility as the suspension travels over uneven terrain.

How to Know If Your Tie Rods Need Replacing

cash for scrap cars in Northyards, Squamish

Much like any mechanical failure, when tie rods start to go, they leave key indicators. So, knowing the signs and symptoms that your tie rods are failing is imperative.

Most mechanics will check your tie rods during routine maintenance like wheel alignments, tire changes, or brake replacement or repair. However, if your vehicle doesn’t go to the shop as much as it should, it can be easy to overlook.

Signs of a Bad Tie Rod Include:

1. Uneven Tire Wear

scrap-car-buying

Uneven tire wear can also signal other issues like bad struts or shocks, or an improperly performed wheel alignment.

So, if the only sign you notice is uneven tread on your tires, have a mechanic, like our friends at Midas on 104th Avenue, check your vehicle’s wheel alignment and suspension system.

Suspension issues are common on aging vehicles or vehicles with high mileage. And we buy MORE scrap cars with suspension issues than any other scrap car buyer in Surrey or Metro Vancouver.

2. Excessive Steering Wheel Movement

Steering Wheel Movement

Some of you might remember what life was like prior to power steering. You’d turn the wheel multiple times, only to get a small lackluster radius turn out of it.

However, nowadays the wheel should only move as much as you intend it too. But if you find that your steering has a little (or a lot) of excess play when turning, it could be a sign that your tie rods are on their way out.

Moreover, if you experience wiggling, shaking, or any unusual vibration while driving or braking, have a professional assess your car. It could be tie rod related, or it could be signaling a larger problem involving your brake system.

3. Clunking Noises When Turning

Anyone who drives an older vehicle or one with high mileage knows that unusual sounds are just part of their charm… Until they’re not. Which is the case when your tie rods are failing.

If your tie rods are on their way out, you’ll typically notice clunking when turning in a specific direction.

It might also be worse when turn over a bump (like speed bumps in a parking lot), or when driving up hill and around a bend (like the many winding roads in Belcarra or North Vancouver).

4. Your Car Pulls to One Side

Wheel pulling

If you’re driving an older vehicle on a daily basis in Metro Vancouver, it surely takes a beating. Because between stop-and-go traffic, spontaneous roundabouts, and plenty of unexpected bouts of construction, our cars really do deal with a lot of physical wear.

And although getting a wheel alignment done from time to time is part of routine maintenance on any vehicle (especially after brake or suspension work), your wheels being out of alignment can indicate that your tie rods are failing.

Your vehicle pulling to one side or the other can also suggest that you have an issue with your tires, with your braking system, or even damage to one of your wheels.

So, if you’re experiencing any of the above issues along with steering that tugs to one side, you’ll want to get your vehicle inspected as soon as you can.

What Happens When Tie Rods Fail on a Car?

Failed tie rod on a car

Proper alignment of tie rods is essential for maintaining accurate steering and even tire wear. If tie rods become worn or damaged, symptoms may include loose or unresponsive steering, uneven tire wear, or clunking noises when turning.

In severe cases, a failed tie rod can cause a complete loss of steering control, posing a serious safety risk. Regular inspection and timely replacement are crucial to ensure vehicle safety and performance.

Overall, tie rods play a massive role in keeping your vehicle stable, responsive, and safe on the road. Without them, steering would be impossible, and driving would be dangerously unpredictable.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace Tie Rods on a Car?

Tie rods are a critical repair, but they don’t come with a price tag that reflects that typically.

It really depends on the type of vehicle you drive, what other neighbouring components need replacing, and the wheel alignment that is required after servicing.

The average cost to replace tie rods on a car in Canada is between $200 – $500. However, it depends mostly on the make and model of vehicle that you drive. Newer vehicles, luxury vehicles, or trucks and 4×4’s can cost upwards of $750 – $900 for a complete replacement.

Additionally, inner tie rods tend to be more expensive than outer rods. And when the replacement is needed on a vehicle that is 15-20 years of age (or one with high mileage), it’s not always practical to do the repairs.

What Happens If You Put Too Much Oil in Your Car?

what happens if you put too much oil in your car?

For most of us, vehicle maintenance consists of putting air in our tires, topping up the windshield washer fluid, and getting our vehicle in for regular (or semi-regular) oil changes. However, sometimes, especially on older vehicles, we need to top up our oil between changes. But what happens if you put too much oil in your car?

Today’s blog post is about what happens if you put too much oil in your car, and what to do about the potential ramifications of that. Whether you’re facing engine damage, performance issues, or vehicle overheating issues, we’ll advise you on what to look out for, and what to do about it.

We are an experienced scrap car removal company that has been buying scrap cars in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley since 2005. We have seen many vehicles suffer catastrophic damage from having too much oil put into the reservoir. This blog post is based off of our firsthand observations and experience.

What Happens When You Overfill the Oil on Your Car?

fluid-check

Virtually any vehicle owner knows that oil is crucial for a vehicle to run smoothly. Its primary function is to keep the moving components of your vehicle’s engine working effectively with little to no friction.

By changing your oil regularly, your vehicle performs better, pollutes less, and even gets better gas mileage. So, oil is a big deal, that’s undeniable. But what happens if you accidentally put in too much oil?

Generally, most oil changes are performed at your local mechanic’s or a specific oil change shop. However, if you’re topping up your oil due to a leak, your engine burning oil, or simply because you are preparing or a road trip, it can be easy to overfill it.

We will discuss what happens to your vehicle if you overfill your oil, what the signs and symptoms are of overfilled oil, and what to do about it in today’s blog post.

What Are the Symptoms That Your Car Has Too Much Oil in It?

Just like any mechanical defect, electrical problem, or general vehicle malfunction, having too much oil in your car will come with warning signs and obvious symptoms. However, if you don’t know that you’ve overfilled your oil, the signs may not be as obvious.

Below we have outlined what to look for if your vehicle has too much oil in it. If you’ve experiencing any of the signs and symptoms that are outlined below, take a few minutes to check your oil levels before hitting the road again.

Signs You Put Too Much Oil in Your Car

1. Oil Level Is Higher Than Max on Dipstick

Too much oil in car

It may seem obvious that if your oil is too full, that you’ll see it on your dipstick. However, if you don’t know how to properly check your oil, you may not even be able to see the fill line.

Additionally, sometimes the lines can be faded and worn on older vehicles, making it even more difficult to discern when to stop filling your oil. Be sure to check your oil in an area with good lighting to ensure you’re getting the most accurate reading possible.

2. Engine Oil Is Foamy

This can happen easily if you overfill your oil because when your oil is over full, it can get whipped by the crankshaft. This causes it to foam up because of the additives and lubrication properties of typical engine oil.

This is one of the most common signs that your engine oil is over full. Moreover, it typically indicates that it is excessively over full. Extremely excessive oil can cause serious engine damage.

So, if you see froth or foam in your oil, get your car inspected a.s.a.p. by a professional like our friends at The Great Canadian Oil Change in Coquitlam.

3. A Distinct Burning Smell Coming from Your Engine

Burning Oil

Older vehicles have a tendency to have all sorts of weird and unusual odors to them. Sometimes it’s from mould or mildew caused by leaks. Other times, it’s coming from the engine or transmission. Which is the case when you put too much oil in your car.

When the oil reservoir gets overfilled, the excess oil can leak onto neighbouring parts. Those parts run hot when the engine is running, because, like the engine itself, they are comprised of many moving parts.

When the spilled oil heats up on these parts, it has a very noticeable odor. A bold burning smell that is unlike other burning smells that can come from driving an aging vehicle, or one that has high mileage.

4. Blue or White Smoke Coming from the Exhaust

Cash for scrap cars

Another clear indicator that you’ve overfilled the oil on your car is blue or white smoke coming from the exhaust pipes.

This can, however, also be an indicator of other issues involving your engine, so be sure to check your oil levels and consult a mechanic before making a definitive decision about whether or not the issue relates strictly to having too much oil.

We’ve seen many vehicles with high mileage or cars with age stacked against them that have various engine issues that were not relating to the oil being overfilled.

Regardless of what kind of engine issues you’re having, we’ll pay you MORE cash for cars with engine issues than any other scrap car removal company in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

5. Oil Pressure Warning Light Illuminated

One of the great things about ever-advancing automotive technology is that there’s almost a warning light for everything nowadays.

And although most mechanical or electrical issues are indicated through the check engine light, there is a separate warning light for issues relating specifically to oil pressure.

And this will become illuminated on your dash if your oil is over full or there are any other kinds of issues pertaining to your oil pressure.

6. New or Worsening Oil Leaks

Oil Leaks

Have you noticed that old oil stain in your garage getting bigger? Perhaps showing signs of new oil drippings?

Have people even commented on how something seems to be leaking from your vehicle wherever you go? If so, you could have an oil leak that is caused by putting too much oil in your vehicle.

When your oil receptacle gets overfilled, it can cause nearby gaskets and seals to fail due to the excessive strain on them.

What To Do If You Overfilled the Oil on Your Car

Draining too much oil from car

If you suspect that you’ve overfilled the oil on your car, there are a few critical decisions to make moving forward. Factoring in how full the oil is, what damage may or may not have occurred, and the age of your vehicle is important.

Step 1: Check Your Oil Levels

If you don’t know where your oil levels are at, it can be tough to establish if the symptoms your vehicle is showing are the cause of overfilled oil.

So, naturally, the first step is to check your oil levels on your car. Because you might think your oil is too full because of the signs you’ve noticed. However, there could be other mechanical issues going on that are not related to too much oil being in your car.

For the more novice vehicle owners, we’ve included a detailed outline of how to properly check your oil on your car a little further down this blog post 😉

At More Cash For Scrap, we have purchased many vehicles with dead engines, fire damage, recurrent oil leaks, and even exhaust system issues. So, if your vehicle is suffering from any of these things, whether caused by too much oil or not, give our scrap car removal team a call.

Step 2: Drain Any Excess Oil

For those that are mechanically savvy, you can watch a quick YouTube tutorial on how to drain excess oil out of a car. Be sure to have plenty of rags handy, an oil receptacle for the excess oil you drain out, and an oil pan to catch the falling oil.

For those that are not so mechanically inclined when it comes to vehicles, consult a mechanic promptly.

We’ve seen many DIY-ers destroy their aging vehicles by trying to perform even the simplest home repairs themselves. Do NOT attempt if you’re not familiar with vehicle mechanics!

Step 3: Consult a Professional Mechanic

Even if you were able to check and drain the excess oil out of your car yourself, it’s imperative that you have a professional assess your vehicle for any long-term damage. Only a licensed and professional mechanic can tell you the true gravity of any damage that your vehicle has incurred due to having too much oil in it.

How Do I Check the Oil on My Car?

How to check your oil

The best way to ensure that you are checking your vehicle’s oil levels properly is to ensure that your vehicle is turned off and has been turned off for at least 5-10 minutes. Because as a vehicle runs, the engine heats up. This residual heat causes the oil to expand and can impact the reading on your dipstick.

After ensuring your vehicle’s engine has cooled, remove the dipstick from the reservoir. Then, immediately wipe the dipstick dry with a piece of paper towel or a clean shop rag.

After doing so, dip the dipstick back into the reservoir all the way to the bottom (you should feel resistance when you’ve reached the end).

Then, pull it back out and see if the oil line aligns within the minimum and maximum line. If it does, you’re in the clear. If it’s too high or too low, address accordingly.

What Can Get Damaged from Putting Too Much Oil in a Car?

Scrap car removal

Vehicles are complex pieces of machinery. And despite how durable they may first appear; there are actually many delicate and easily worn components that can be affected badly by putting too much oil in your car.

Damage From Putting Too Much Oil in Your Car Includes:

The Top 6 Most Expensive Car Repairs

Ladner scrap car recycling, removal and towing

Nobody likes getting a big bill from their mechanic. And it hits even harder when the vehicle that’s getting repaired is aging, has high mileage, or is still in need of several other smaller repairs.

And knowing when to cut your losses and when not to is important as well. Which is why today’s blog post is about the top 6 most expensive car repairs in British Columbia.

Cash for Scrap Cars Near Me

As a professional scrap car removal company that has been buying scrap cars in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley since 2005, we felt it was important to share our knowledge about what repairs cost the most on a car, and whether or not they are worth doing.

Every vehicle is different, and when major repairs are needed, it can be tough to discern whether or not they should even be done. But we’ll cover the dos and don’ts of major car repairs in today’s blog, and hopefully, leave you a bit more mechanically savvy as a result.

Most Expensive Repairs on a Car

It’s never fun getting a mechanic’s bill. And it’s even less fun when that bill is far greater than expected.

It’s even worse when the bill costs more than what your vehicle is worth. However, this is something that happens frequently throughout Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Daily drivers take a lot of punishment in the Lower Mainland. Between stop-and-go traffic, unpredictable weather, and excessive smog and pollution, a vehicle’s system can really take a beating. And that beating leads to big repairs.

How to Know If I Should Fix My Car?

Knowing which ones are worth doing on an aging vehicle, and which ones aren’t, is key to preventing yourself from investing in something that isn’t worth the investment.

Which is why we have composed today’s blog post about what the most expensive repairs are on a car, and what to do about them.

The Most Expensive Repairs on a Vehicle

We’ve listed the top 6 most expensive repairs on a car in British Columbia in order of most expensive to least expensive. We’ve also included valuable information about diagnosing any of these potential issues, what signs and symptoms to watch out for, and how you can sell your car for MORE cash if the cost outweighs the benefit.

Most Expensive Car Repairs Are:

1. Replacing Engine Cylinders ($6,900-$11,000)

Bad Engine Cylinders

It’s a common misconception that replacing an engine on your vehicle is the most expensive repair on a car. When the reality is that replacing your vehicle’s engine is sometimes the solution for a much bigger problem. A problem like malfunctioning or failing engine cylinders.

The cost to replace engine cylinders is so high because in order to swap the cylinders out, the mechanic needs to remove your engine entirely from the vehicle to get to them. So, depending on what type of vehicle you drive, and what kind of engine it has, you may be better off to simply get your engine replaced.

Regardless, if your mechanic has hit you with the bad news of damaged engine cylinders and you’re considering scrapping your vehicle instead, contact More Cash For Scrap. We offer MORE cash for cars with engine damage, or those in need of an engine replacement.

2. Hybrid Battery Replacement ($6,000+)

Dead Hybrid Battery

Clean energy vehicles are quickly becoming the wave of the future. And it’s not entirely because of how much better they are for the environment. But it’s because of rising fuel costs that are driving people away from the pumps, and towards a charger.

And although hybrids are a great investment, particularly for anyone who spends a lot of time on the road, some of their repairs can be quite costly. Repairs like replacing their most important component; their battery.

Expensive Car Repairs Not Worth Doing

The average cost to replace a hybrid battery in British Columbia is about $6,000-$8,000. However, depending on what type of electric vehicle you’re driving, the cost can be upwards of $15,000-$18,000. Which is why many people end up scrapping their aging hybrids that need a battery replacement instead.

At More Cash For Scrap, we pay the most cash for scrap cars, especially hybrid vehicles with dead batteries. Because unlike other scrap car buyers, we consider MORE than just what your vehicle’s metal weight is. So, when you need a $6,000 repair and want to scrap your car, scrap it with More Cash For Scrap.

3. Engine Replacement ($4,000-$8,000)

Engine Replacement Most Expensive Car Repairs

At More Cash For Scrap, we LOVE buying late model sedans and SUVs with dead engines. However, most of the people who are scrapping them aren’t all that happy to be. Mostly because vehicles with dead engines are typically in reasonable shape, but that one major repair was all it took to render them as scrap.

In Metro Vancouver, our friends at West Coast Auto Repair will tell you that the average cost to replace an engine is about $4,500. However, that entirely depends on the type of engine you’re replacing, and what type of vehicle it belongs to.

The most important thing when considering engine replacement is to see if your engine actually needs replacing. Knowing the signs and having a proper diagnosis from a mechanic is essential.

The following are signs and symptoms that your engine is failing:

  • Poor performance
  • Worsening gas mileage
  • Unusual engine sounds like knocking, ticking, whining, or humming
  • Difficulty starting your vehicle
  • Engine overheating
  • New or worsening engine vibration
  • Check engine light illuminated
Junk car removal Services

Larger vehicles that have more torque and more powerful engines, will usually be more expensive than others to replace the engine. That’s because the bigger the motor, the more work involved. And when there are other components that have been damaged or are worn that need replacing, the cost and labour to repair or replace those adds to the bill.

Many newer vehicles come with an optional warranty that will cover things like engine replacement. If you’re considering buying a new vehicle, or even a used one that comes with an optional warranty, be sure to see if engine replacement is covered within it.

4. Transmission Replacement ($2,800-$4,500)

A transmission is one repair that is needed on virtually every vehicle at one point or another. And in this day and age, it can happen more now than it ever did.

This is mainly because certain transmissions are more prone to malfunction and failure than others. One being the CVT transmission, which is widely used on many late model vehicles.

The CVT transmission was created to offer drivers a smoother shifting experience on automatic vehicles. However, although they do provide a smoother ride, they do so at a very high price.

Cash for Cars with Bad Transmissions

The price of reliability. Because many vehicle owners who have a CVT transmission reported transmission failure at less than 200,000 kms.

At More Cash For Scrap though, we LOVE buying late model sedans and SUVs with failed transmissions. Even ones that are equipped with a bad CVT transmission.

Just call our scrap car removal team today and we’ll make you an instant cash offer on your vehicle. We love buying cars, trucks, sedans, and vans with bad transmissions!

5. Head Gasket Replacement ($1,300-$2,500+)

head-gasket-noises

Much like the engine cylinders, the head gasket is a vital component to proper engine operation on any vehicle. When a head gasket malfunctions, many other things become affected and can fail as well. Which is why the cost to replace a head gasket is so high.

Replacing a head gasket usually means replacing a lot more than simply the head gasket. Typically, when a head gasket fails, other issues arise. And those issues all take time, parts, and money to repair or replace as well. Knowing what to watch our for is critical in deciding whether or not to even do the repairs.

Signs Your Head Gasket Is Failing or Has Failed Include:

  • Antifreeze/coolant mixing with engine oil
  • White smoke coming from tailpipes
  • Loss of power
  • External leaks
  • Going through coolant faster (due to leaks)
  • Engine misfiring
  • Bubbles on your radiator
  • Overheating engine
  • Overheating cooling system

There are so many indicators that your head gasket is failing. However, only a true professional like our friends at Jesperson’s Auto Repair can properly diagnose a failed head gasket.

Moreover, they would be the best people to establish whether or not your engine has suffered significant damaged due to the failing head gasket. Give them a call and see if your vehicle can be salvaged, or if it should be scrapped with More Cash For Scrap.

6. Suspension Repair or Replacement ($2,500 – $5,000+)

Signs of Bad Shocks on a Car

For our customers in the Fraser Valley, we are sure you know all too well what the cost of lifting a vehicle is. Furthermore, you’re probably well-versed on what’s involved with completely redoing your suspension. Because Fraser Valley residents love their 4×4 vehicles, and they love to punish them in the great outdoors.

However, when your 4×4 is aging and sustains significant damage while being put to the test, scrap car removal may be in your near future. Because replacing your suspension could cost you thousands of dollars, depending on what needs replacing, and what type of vehicle you drive.

Where to Sell a Car with Suspension Issues

Not only are you paying for parts when you suspension fails, but you are also paying major labour costs. Additionally, after the suspension has been replaced, you also need a wheel alignment to ensure everything is exactly where it should be.

Between all the little extras, the cost of parts, and the labour involved, you’re easily looking at a minimum of $1,500 for the average car. And at least double for off-road vehicles and lifted aging pick-up trucks.

MORE Cash for Cars with Major Mechanical Issues

Junk Car Removal

Something that really sets us apart from other scrap car removal companies in the Lower Mainland is the fact that we pay MORE cash for scrap cars in any condition.

Because you might think that a scrap car buyer will buy any vehicle, no matter what the issue. And while this is generally true, it doesn’t mean they pay you a fair price.

Some scrap car buyers will buy cars with dead engines, blown head gaskets, failed suspensions or transmissions, or even snapped timing chains. But what they offer you is next to nothing for a vehicle that only has one major issue.

Scrap Car Buyers in Metro Vancouver

Which means you forfeit all of the value that is left in the rest of your vehicle just to scrap your car.

However, if you choose our scrap car removal services, you’ll get a customized offer based solely on your specific vehicle, and ALL that it has to offer.

Because if your Mercedes needs a new engine, but is immaculate otherwise, should you really give it away for a mere $150? We think not.

How Much Cash for Scrap Cars Do We Pay?

cash for scrap cars

As we just mentioned, our instant cash offers are based off of your vehicle, and all that it brings to the table. Which is why it is important for our scrap car removal team to get all of the details of what you’re scrapping and why, before making you an offer on it.

Call our scrap car removal team and provide us with the make, model, year, condition, mileage, and location of your vehicle. Then, let us know of any major mechanical issues or any that it previous had that you’ve already repaired. Recent repairs could potentially increase your vehicle’s value.

Moreover, advise our scrap car removal team of whether or not your vehicle is still running. Because at More Cash For Scrap, running vehicles are definitely worth MORE than ones that are not!

After we have all of this information, we’ll make you an instant cash offer right over the phone. If you accept the offer, we’ll send over our free towing service to collect your car. Our driver will then load your vehicle up on our truck, and pay you cash in hand before leaving.

The American Luxury Icon with a Complicated Past

For decades, Lincoln has stood as one of the most recognizable names in American luxury. From the presidential limos of the 1960’s to the chrome-laden Town Cars of the ’90s, Lincoln was once the symbol of prestige, power, and pure comfort on the road.

Even today, models like the Lincoln Navigator and Aviator continue to turn heads with their bold styling, premium interiors, and advanced tech features. But while Lincoln vehicles are built to impress, not all of them are built to last forever.

Like any luxury brand, Lincoln vehicles come with a price tag. Not only at the dealership, but also when it comes to repairs and maintenance. With complex air suspension systems, turbocharged engines, and tech-packed interiors, these vehicles can become money pits. Particularly once they’re out of warranty.

Which is why many Lincoln owners in Chilliwack find themselves at a crossroads: should you invest thousands in repairs, or is it time to move on? Call and speak to our scrap car removal specialists to help make the decision.

Common Lincoln Vehicle Problems

Scrapped Lincoln Town Car

Before pouring more money into a problematic Lincoln, it’s worth understanding just how frequently these issues show up—especially in older or higher-mileage models. Whether you drive a luxury sedan like the MKZ or a full-size SUV like the Navigator, many Lincoln owners eventually face one or more of these headaches:

1. Transmission Failure

Many Lincoln models—particularly the MKZ, MKT, and MKX—are prone to transmission problems. These range from jerky shifting to complete transmission failure, often occurring around the 100,000–150,000 km mark. Rebuilding or replacing a transmission can cost thousands—making it uneconomical on older cars.

2. Air Suspension Problems

The Lincoln Navigator, Town Car, and MKT often came with air suspension systems designed to give a smooth ride. But over time, these systems tend to leak or fail, leading to a sagging rear end or an uneven stance. Replacing these systems can cost upwards of $2,000.

3. Engine Stalling & Misfires

Several Lincolns—especially those equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost—are prone to carbon buildup, coolant leaks, misfires, and stalling. Other engines suffer from timing chain stretch or oil dilution, leading to poor performance and potentially catastrophic engine damage.

4. Brake System Defects

The Lincoln MKZ and MKC frequently show premature brake pad and rotor wear, sometimes needing full replacements in under 50,000 km. There have also been reports of a “soft” brake pedal, and in some cases, ABS or electronic brake assist failures.

5. Cooling System Problems

The Lincoln LS, MKS, and older Navigators are known for coolant leaks, cracked radiator tanks, and thermostat housing failures. These issues can cause engine overheating and significant damage if ignored.

6. Power Steering Failures

Some newer Lincoln models use electric power steering, which has been known to fail without warning—leaving drivers with a stiff or unresponsive steering wheel. This is especially common in vehicles around 5–8 years old.

7. Fuel System Issues

Fuel pump failures—particularly in models like the MKC and Navigator—can lead to hard starts, stalling, or poor acceleration. These are expensive to fix and potentially dangerous if they occur while driving.

When Mazda Repairs Cost More Than They’re Worth

cash-4-junk-cars

As a professional scrap car removal company that’s been buying scrap cars in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley since 2005, we’ve seen a lot of vehicles. We know that one of the reasons people scrap Mazda vehicles is because fixing them simply just doesn’t make sense.

Because when the cost of repairs outweighs the remaining value of your vehicle, it may be time to consider scrap car removal. It’s important to really know how much all those repairs are costing you over time to make a good choice about your vehicle.

For Mazda vehicles, some big fixes can cost a lot. Things like replacing the transmission (between $1,800 to $3,400), rebuilding the engine (reaching $2,500 to $5,000), or fixing mystery electrical problems (up to $1,000) can really add up. Having one of these major mechanical defects could ultimately lead to the need for reliable scrap car removal.

Also, if your Mazda has had a lot of repairs, it won’t be worth as much if you try to sell it later. People don’t want to buy cars with a history of problems, and even less so when that vehicle is aging or has high mileage.

Signs Your Mazda Is Ready for Scrap Car Removal

Mazda cars are often liked for their fun driving ability and good looks. You might know them best for their special rotary engines and their Skyactiv®-G engines which help save gas by boosting fuel efficiency and economy. But like anything else in today’s world, even Mazda’s don’t last forever.

Knowing when it’s time to say goodbye to your Mazda can be hard, especially if you have good memories with it. But ignoring signs that it’s getting too old and worn out can cause more problems.

Cash for scrap cars in Metro Vancouver

Moreover, more problems equal more money out of pocket. Which is why knowing what signs suggest scrap car removal is so important.

Signs Your Mazda Needs Scrap Car Removal

1. Transmission Failure

Fixing or replacing your aging Mazda’s transmission costs more than what the whole car is even worth these days in a lot of cases. And that’s why many people choose the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap instead of paying for a large repair like that.

You might notice it’s hard to change gears, the gears feel like they’re slipping while you’re driving, it makes weird clunking or whining noises when you shift. Or maybe it just won’t go into certain gears at all. Sometimes, it just stops working completely. That’s when you know that transmission failure is a harsh reality.

2. Extensive Rust, Mould, or Corrosion

Cash for Scrap Cars

If your Mazda has really bad rust that’s eating away at important parts, like the frame or the bottom of the car, it’s not safe anymore and usually not worth fixing.

You might see actual holes or really flaky rust in those areas. The car might even feel shaky when you drive, or you might hear weird noises. If it fails a safety check because of rust, that’s a major sign.

3. Various Electrical System Failures or Malfunctions

When your Mazda has lots of electrical problems that keep coming back and are hard to figure out, it can get really expensive. Because your mechanic will spend the majority of his time trying to find the source of the problem.

And even when he does, there could be more than one problem going on electrically. And all of his detective work is at a labour rate of approximately $75-$90 an hour in British Columbia.

Signs Your Mazda Has Electrical Problems:

  • Battery keeps dying
  • Lights flickering or not working
  • Difficulty starting your Mazda
  • Issues with power window or door locks
  • Sporadic or frequent stalling
  • Malfunctioning heating or cooling issues

Knowing exactly what type of electrical problem you’re facing is a job for a professional mechanic like our friends at Dolphin Automotive in Abbotsford. They can get to the bottom of whatever issue you’re having with your Mazda vehicle.

4. Old Age or High Mileage

While it’s not the only thing that matters, how old your Mazda is and how many kilometres it’s been driven are big clues. If it’s got over 321,000 kilometers or is older than 15 years (or both!), it’s statistically destined to have mechanical breakdown.

In addition to mechanical problems that come with high mileage, so does the potential for a huge loss in resale value. Which means that if you’re considering selling your used Mazda vehicle but can’t get a decent price for it because of its age or mileage, sell it to More Cash For Scrap.

We pay MORE cash for scrap cars than any other scrap car removal company in Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley. Plus, we provide free towing and even offer free roadside vehicle removal after an accident or breakdown.

6. Frequent Mechanical Breakdowns

cash-for-scrap-cars-with-bad-transmissions

If your Mazda is constantly having mechanical problems, even after you’ve already fixed it, it’s probably getting to the end of its life. This could be the “check engine” light always being on, the transmission keeps slipping, the engine is making weird noises or overheating, or the brakes or suspension are always acting up.

When your Mazda starts feeling like it’s just not reliable anymore, and is costing more to run than what you’d pay in new car payments, consider our scrap car removal services instead. We pay MORE cash for scrap cars than the other guys!

7. Repair Costs Way Higher than Vehicle Value

This is the big one. If the shop tells you it’s going to cost more to fix your Mazda than what you could even sell it for, it’s definitely time to think about scrapping it.

You can check online to see what your car might be worth. However, if the repairs are half or more of its value, scrapping your car for MORE cash might be the smarter move.

Basically, if you’re dealing with these kinds of headaches, it’s worth talking to a scrap car buyer. At More Cash for Scrap, we can help you figure out if your Mazda is better off in the scrap yard or on Facebook marketplace.
