Why Is My Car Shaking?

Why is my car shaking

For those of you who drive an aging vehicle, a high mileage vehicle, or drive a vehicle that you purchased used recently, you’ll want to read this blog post. Because one of the most commonly asked question for people in these situations is, “why is my car shaking?”.

It can suddenly come on out of the blue, or it can start as a slight vibration, and slowly worsen over time.

Additionally, it could have been present at the time that you bought your vehicle if you purchased used. However, the issue that the previous owner thought it was might not actually be the problem.

What Makes a Car Suddenly Shake?

scrap cars for cash

Most vehicles don’t typically start shaking suddenly and without warning. That’s not to say that it doesn’t happen at all, but it’s just not as common as a progressive shake that has evolved over time.

From bad brakes to a faulty sway bar to even something as simple as tire or wheel damage; we’ll discuss in detail what the most common causes of a car shaking are and what to do about it in today’s blog post.

We are a professional scrap car removal company that has been buying scrap cars across the Lower Mainland since 2005. We have seen and hear it all when it comes to mechanical failures and defects. And today, we’ll share some of the knowledge and experience with you.

What Is My Car Shaking When Driving?

When it comes to shaking on a vehicle, it’s not so much the severity of the shake that helps a mechanic determine what is causing it, as it is when the shake is happening.

Because if your vehicle is shaking only when you brake, that could signal worn, damaged, or malfunctioning brake systems.

But if your vehicle is shaking when you accelerate, that could imply that the transmission is struggling, the engine isn’t secure, and a whole host of other problems.

The Most Common Causes of Car Vibrations

With such a plethora of causes of vehicle vibrations, shaking, and shuddering, we’ve broken down which issues you may be experiencing, and what can cause it below.

1. Car Shaking When Idling

Wheel pulling

Aging vehicles, like the ones we buy across the Lower Mainland, have a natural tendency to shake or vibrate when idling.

This is due in part to worn engine components and tired transmissions, but it can also signal a deeper and more costly repair that is on the horizon.

The Most Common Causes of Your Car Shaking When Idling Include:

  • Loose or damaged engine mounts
  • Malfunctioning idle control valve
  • Miscellaneous vacuum leaks
  • Worn spark plugs (should be changed approximately every 150,000 kms)
  • Failing fuel pump
  • Malfunction throttle position sensor
  • Dirty fuel injectors
  • Damaged or worn belts
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Faulty camshaft timing

As you can see, there are many different reasons that your vehicle will shake, shuddering, or vibrate while sitting at idle. It could be something minor, or something more in depth.

The best way to determine what you’re dealing with is to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic like the good people at Hudson Automotive in Langley, BC.

2. Car Shaking When Accelerating

Car shaking while driving

If the shaking you’re feeling only happens when you’re accelerating, it could be one of several different causes. And these issues are particularly common amongst older or high mileage vehicles.

Possible Causes of Car Shaking When Accelerating Include:

  • Wheels not balanced
  • CV joint damage or failure
  • Engine issues like misfires or worn engine mounts
  • Driveshaft malfunction
  • Failing transmission
  • Damaged tires or wheels (or both)
  • Suspension issues
  • Sway bar issues

The most common problems we see as a scrap car buyer that cause vehicle vibration or shaking when accelerating are failing transmissions, failing engines, or suspension problems.

And when that happens on an older vehicle, many Lower Mainland residents turn to the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap instead of doing a costly repair.

3. Car Shaking When Braking

Braking

If you’re noticing that your vehicle is shaking when you’re braking, the most likely cause is, you guessed it, your brakes!

Because any issue that happens when you apply the brake, typically means that something within your brake system is malfunctioning or failing. And the most common cause of shaking when braking on a car is bad, worn, or damaged rotors.

Additionally, it can also be due some of the following:

  • Extremely worn brake pads
  • Suspension issues
  • A poor wheel alignment
  • A seized brake caliper
  • Tires with cupping, bulging, or minimal tread

If your vehicle is shaking when braking, the cost to repair it is likely more inexpensive than if it were shaking upon acceleration or idle.

However, complete brake jobs or major suspension work can be costly in some cases, depending on the type of vehicle you drive, and its age.

4. Car Shaking When I Turn

scrap-car-buyers

If you’re noticing that your vehicle shakes when you’re turning corners, it could be something as simple as a bumpy road, unfilled potholes, or even the desperate need for a wheel alignment.

However, it could also signal a much bigger issue, or multiple issues, that need to be properly addressed by a professional mechanic.

Most Common Causes of Car Shaking When Turning Include:

  • Suspension problems
  • Damaged, worn, or over inflated tires
  • Damaged wheels
  • Failing CV axle
  • Poor wheel alignment
  • Limited or no traction (on slippery roads)
  • Steering system malfunction
  • Extremely bumpy roadways

No matter what the reason for your vehicle shaking, it’s always a good idea to have it inspected by professional to rule out any potential safety risks.

This is especially common with older vehicles or vehicles with high mileage. Which is why many Lower Mainland residents choose to scrap their car with us instead of doing costly repairs.

What Happens If You Put Too Much Oil in Your Car?

what happens if you put too much oil in your car?

For most of us, vehicle maintenance consists of putting air in our tires, topping up the windshield washer fluid, and getting our vehicle in for regular (or semi-regular) oil changes. However, sometimes, especially on older vehicles, we need to top up our oil between changes. But what happens if you put too much oil in your car?

Today’s blog post is about what happens if you put too much oil in your car, and what to do about the potential ramifications of that. Whether you’re facing engine damage, performance issues, or vehicle overheating issues, we’ll advise you on what to look out for, and what to do about it.

We are an experienced scrap car removal company that has been buying scrap cars in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley since 2005. We have seen many vehicles suffer catastrophic damage from having too much oil put into the reservoir. This blog post is based off of our firsthand observations and experience.

What Happens When You Overfill the Oil on Your Car?

fluid-check

Virtually any vehicle owner knows that oil is crucial for a vehicle to run smoothly. Its primary function is to keep the moving components of your vehicle’s engine working effectively with little to no friction.

By changing your oil regularly, your vehicle performs better, pollutes less, and even gets better gas mileage. So, oil is a big deal, that’s undeniable. But what happens if you accidentally put in too much oil?

Generally, most oil changes are performed at your local mechanic’s or a specific oil change shop. However, if you’re topping up your oil due to a leak, your engine burning oil, or simply because you are preparing or a road trip, it can be easy to overfill it.

We will discuss what happens to your vehicle if you overfill your oil, what the signs and symptoms are of overfilled oil, and what to do about it in today’s blog post.

What Are the Symptoms That Your Car Has Too Much Oil in It?

Just like any mechanical defect, electrical problem, or general vehicle malfunction, having too much oil in your car will come with warning signs and obvious symptoms. However, if you don’t know that you’ve overfilled your oil, the signs may not be as obvious.

Below we have outlined what to look for if your vehicle has too much oil in it. If you’ve experiencing any of the signs and symptoms that are outlined below, take a few minutes to check your oil levels before hitting the road again.

Signs You Put Too Much Oil in Your Car

1. Oil Level Is Higher Than Max on Dipstick

Too much oil in car

It may seem obvious that if your oil is too full, that you’ll see it on your dipstick. However, if you don’t know how to properly check your oil, you may not even be able to see the fill line.

Additionally, sometimes the lines can be faded and worn on older vehicles, making it even more difficult to discern when to stop filling your oil. Be sure to check your oil in an area with good lighting to ensure you’re getting the most accurate reading possible.

2. Engine Oil Is Foamy

This can happen easily if you overfill your oil because when your oil is over full, it can get whipped by the crankshaft. This causes it to foam up because of the additives and lubrication properties of typical engine oil.

This is one of the most common signs that your engine oil is over full. Moreover, it typically indicates that it is excessively over full. Extremely excessive oil can cause serious engine damage.

So, if you see froth or foam in your oil, get your car inspected a.s.a.p. by a professional like our friends at The Great Canadian Oil Change in Coquitlam.

3. A Distinct Burning Smell Coming from Your Engine

Burning Oil

Older vehicles have a tendency to have all sorts of weird and unusual odors to them. Sometimes it’s from mould or mildew caused by leaks. Other times, it’s coming from the engine or transmission. Which is the case when you put too much oil in your car.

When the oil reservoir gets overfilled, the excess oil can leak onto neighbouring parts. Those parts run hot when the engine is running, because, like the engine itself, they are comprised of many moving parts.

When the spilled oil heats up on these parts, it has a very noticeable odor. A bold burning smell that is unlike other burning smells that can come from driving an aging vehicle, or one that has high mileage.

4. Blue or White Smoke Coming from the Exhaust

Cash for scrap cars

Another clear indicator that you’ve overfilled the oil on your car is blue or white smoke coming from the exhaust pipes.

This can, however, also be an indicator of other issues involving your engine, so be sure to check your oil levels and consult a mechanic before making a definitive decision about whether or not the issue relates strictly to having too much oil.

We’ve seen many vehicles with high mileage or cars with age stacked against them that have various engine issues that were not relating to the oil being overfilled.

Regardless of what kind of engine issues you’re having, we’ll pay you MORE cash for cars with engine issues than any other scrap car removal company in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

5. Oil Pressure Warning Light Illuminated

One of the great things about ever-advancing automotive technology is that there’s almost a warning light for everything nowadays.

And although most mechanical or electrical issues are indicated through the check engine light, there is a separate warning light for issues relating specifically to oil pressure.

And this will become illuminated on your dash if your oil is over full or there are any other kinds of issues pertaining to your oil pressure.

6. New or Worsening Oil Leaks

Oil Leaks

Have you noticed that old oil stain in your garage getting bigger? Perhaps showing signs of new oil drippings?

Have people even commented on how something seems to be leaking from your vehicle wherever you go? If so, you could have an oil leak that is caused by putting too much oil in your vehicle.

When your oil receptacle gets overfilled, it can cause nearby gaskets and seals to fail due to the excessive strain on them.

What To Do If You Overfilled the Oil on Your Car

Draining too much oil from car

If you suspect that you’ve overfilled the oil on your car, there are a few critical decisions to make moving forward. Factoring in how full the oil is, what damage may or may not have occurred, and the age of your vehicle is important.

Step 1: Check Your Oil Levels

If you don’t know where your oil levels are at, it can be tough to establish if the symptoms your vehicle is showing are the cause of overfilled oil.

So, naturally, the first step is to check your oil levels on your car. Because you might think your oil is too full because of the signs you’ve noticed. However, there could be other mechanical issues going on that are not related to too much oil being in your car.

For the more novice vehicle owners, we’ve included a detailed outline of how to properly check your oil on your car a little further down this blog post 😉

At More Cash For Scrap, we have purchased many vehicles with dead engines, fire damage, recurrent oil leaks, and even exhaust system issues. So, if your vehicle is suffering from any of these things, whether caused by too much oil or not, give our scrap car removal team a call.

Step 2: Drain Any Excess Oil

For those that are mechanically savvy, you can watch a quick YouTube tutorial on how to drain excess oil out of a car. Be sure to have plenty of rags handy, an oil receptacle for the excess oil you drain out, and an oil pan to catch the falling oil.

For those that are not so mechanically inclined when it comes to vehicles, consult a mechanic promptly.

We’ve seen many DIY-ers destroy their aging vehicles by trying to perform even the simplest home repairs themselves. Do NOT attempt if you’re not familiar with vehicle mechanics!

Step 3: Consult a Professional Mechanic

Even if you were able to check and drain the excess oil out of your car yourself, it’s imperative that you have a professional assess your vehicle for any long-term damage. Only a licensed and professional mechanic can tell you the true gravity of any damage that your vehicle has incurred due to having too much oil in it.

How Do I Check the Oil on My Car?

How to check your oil

The best way to ensure that you are checking your vehicle’s oil levels properly is to ensure that your vehicle is turned off and has been turned off for at least 5-10 minutes. Because as a vehicle runs, the engine heats up. This residual heat causes the oil to expand and can impact the reading on your dipstick.

After ensuring your vehicle’s engine has cooled, remove the dipstick from the reservoir. Then, immediately wipe the dipstick dry with a piece of paper towel or a clean shop rag.

After doing so, dip the dipstick back into the reservoir all the way to the bottom (you should feel resistance when you’ve reached the end).

Then, pull it back out and see if the oil line aligns within the minimum and maximum line. If it does, you’re in the clear. If it’s too high or too low, address accordingly.

What Can Get Damaged from Putting Too Much Oil in a Car?

Scrap car removal

Vehicles are complex pieces of machinery. And despite how durable they may first appear; there are actually many delicate and easily worn components that can be affected badly by putting too much oil in your car.

What Happens When Your Car Sits Too Long?

Cars are meant to be driven. But usually, when we travel a lot for long periods, either for vacation, study, or work, we leave our car behind. And sometimes, we just don’t use our car anymore simply because it’s old. While others have issues that haven’t been addressed. Because of this, our vehicle can be left to sit. But what happens when your car sits too long anyways?

It today’s blog post, we’ll go over what to expect from a stagnant vehicle that is aging and has mechanical defects. We’ll talk about what things physically can decline quickly, what mechanical deficits to expect from inactivity, and what you can do if you own an aging vehicle that has been sitting longer than it was every on the road.

At More Cash For Scrap, we have been providing scrap car removal services throughout Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley since 2005. And no one pays MORE cash for scrap cars than we do. We have seen it all when it comes to junk vehicles. And today’s blog post is written from our own personal and professional experiences in the scrap car removal industry.

What Can Happen to a Car After Sitting Too Long?

junk car buyers

Just like we need to move to stay healthy, a car needs to be driven to work properly. When a person just sits around, he could feel weak and stiff. That’s exactly the same for cars. When it sits for a long time, its parts start to break down or get stuck.

First of all, your car could develop battery issues. We know that even when off, your car has “parasitic drains” from onboard electronics. And when it’s not driven for a long time, the alternator can’t recharge the battery. If that happens, the battery could die completely. It’s more than just an inconvenience; your car can suffer permanent damage because of a dead battery.

Additionally, if your car sits in one place for so long, it can have tire issues. Since it’s not moving, the car’s weight is constantly on one spot of your tire. It can cause flat spots that can permanently damage the tire’s structure. And it often requires expensive replacements!

Is It Bad for a Car To Sit for a Long Time?

Scrap car removal in strawberry hill, surrey

The gasoline in your car’s fuel tank can also break down over time and turn into sticky, varnish-like substance. This substance can clog fuel lines, injectors, and the fuel pump. And this makes your car impossible to start.

And the worst? Mechanical problems! These are perhaps the most expensive to fix. Inside the car, old gas turns sticky, which clog lines. Brake parts rust and get stuck. Even the engine and other moving parts can suffer from lack of use. They can seize or wear out quickly when you finally try to drive. Really, a lot of things can go wrong when you leave your car undriven for a long time!

Fortunately, at More Cash For Scrap, we pay MORE cash for cars that have been sitting for a long time. Vehicles with seized engines, blown head gaskets, failed transmissions, and seized brakes are all worth MORE when you choose our scrap car removal services.

How Long is “Too Long”?

scrap junk, old and used vehicles

There’s no definite time on how long your car can sit without problems. That depends on its age and current condition , as well as how hot or humid the are that it’s stored in is. Additionally, colder or wetter climates will also have a negative impact on a vehicle that is left outdoors for long periods of time.

Usually, leaving your car for a few days to a week won’t cause any problems. But after two to four weeks, your battery might die due to hidden power drains. This is especially common on older vehicles or vehicles with high mileage.

If it sits for a few months, expect a dead battery, flat spots on tires, and fuel starting to turn into a sticky mess within the gas tank. Brakes will also likely begin to rust and/or seize up, along with any known leaks worsening from prolonged outdoor exposure.

And beyond six months, serious and expensive damage is almost guaranteed without proper care. Expect rust on the body and vital parts, potential pest infestations including the chewing of wires, and degraded fluids, hoses, and belts.

Signs that Your Undriven Car is In Trouble

Some signs are easy to notice—-rust, flat or deflated tires, no lights or power, or even a strong moldy or gas smell. But the most damaging issues are often hidden and need a closer look or a mechanic’s assessment to find out.

Here are some signs your car is in trouble:

Contaminated or Degraded Fluids:

You can’t see the gas turning gooey or the oil breaking down inside. These hidden changes hurt your engine and brakes. You might only find out when the car won’t start or when liquids leak out.

Seized Brake Components:

Rust can glue brake pads to the wheels. You won’t see this from the outside, but it will stop your wheels from turning or make the car pull to one side when you try to drive.

Pest Damage:

Mice or bugs can build nests and chew wires. You might only see droppings, or find out when the car won’t start or warning lights come on.

Corroded Fuel Lines/Tank:

Hidden rust inside the fuel tank or lines can cause leaks or blockages that you won’t spot until there’s a big problem.

Dry Rot on Hoses and Belts:

Rubber parts dry out and crack when not used. Some are hidden and can break suddenly when you try to start the car, causing major engine trouble.

Engine & Transmission Problems:

When the car sits, the inside parts of the engine and transmission don’t get lubricated properly. They can rust, get gunked up, or even get stuck. Then, the car just won’t move or work right.

Electrical Headaches:

Wires can get rusty from moisture, even without pests. This can cause things like blown fuses or features just stopping. Finding and fixing these electrical issues can be a real pain.

The sad truth? Most of these hidden problems usually mean really expensive fixes. What looks like a small repair can quickly turn into a bill for thousands of dollars. That’s because mechanics often have to dig deep to find the issue, replace stuck parts, or fix bad rust and wiring.

Maple Ridge Scrap Car Buyers

Scrap car removal companies in the Lower Mainland can be very tricky to navigate. Because some junk car buyers will say they pay the most cash for scrap cars. But the reality is that they don’t even come close.

Other junk car removal companies will say they offer free towing and same day scrap car removal services. But when you get an offer from them, it’s much less than the competition because they secretly deduct towing fees from their offer.

Moreover, they tell you that they’ll pick up your car the same day, but something “comes up” and they have to reschedule for a day or two later. And when you need your car gone in a hurry, this is incredibly inconvenient.

But when you call More Cash For Scrap, you’ll always get prompt, professional, and reliable scrap car removal services in Maple Ridge. Furthermore, we can usually accommodate same day junk car removal. And unlike some scrap car buyers, our towing is always 100% free from anywhere in the Lower Mainland.

Why Does Maple Ridge Choose Our Services?

You’ll know you’ve found the right scrap car removal company when the entire process is quick and easy. Additionally, you’ll know you’ve found somebody reputable when they pay exactly what they say. These are just some of the reasons that Maple Ridge residents choose our junk car removal services over any other.

What We Always Provide:

  • Instant cash offers over the phone or by text
  • Free towing from anywhere in the Lower Mainland
  • Roadside vehicle removal after an accident or breakdown
  • Junk car removal available 7 days a week, from 7:00 AM-11:00 PM
  • The best customer service in the scrap car buying industry
  • MORE cash for scrap cars than the other guys!

If you’ve called around to other junk car buyers and found that the service wasn’t what you had hoped for, or their offers were far less than you’d like, give us a call. We are always happy to answer any questions that you have about our scrap car removal process.

Maple Ridge is a big town, in a little town body. Because what started out as a mostly farming community, has exploded over the years and become a thriving metropolis in many ways. How To Tell If Your Engine Block Is Cracked

Car with Cracked Engine Block

Finding out from your mechanic that your engine block is cracked is always a bit of a blow. However, some people don’t find out from their mechanic before something catastrophic happens. Sometimes, they find out when their vehicle leaves them on the side of the road. Which leaves them wondering how to tell if your engine block is cracked.

Because no matter what mechanical failure your vehicle sends your way, there will almost always be indicators before a component fails. Aside from the typical check engine light of death, your vehicle will throw out many different signals that your engine block is cracked.

In today’s blog post, we’ll cover what those signs are, what to do about them, and where to scrap your car if it’s not worth repairing. More Cash For Scrap has been a professional scrap car removal company serving the Lower Mainland since 2005. Our blogs are based off of our firsthand experience and knowledge in the scrap car buying business.

What Is an Engine Block on a Car?

Engine Block on Car

he engine block is essentially the foundation of your vehicle’s engine. It houses many of the major components that allow your car to operate smoothly. Without it, your vehicle simply would not be functional.

Think of it as the heart of your car. When something goes wrong with the engine block, it can affect the entire vehicle, not just the engine itself. That’s why it’s essential to recognize signs of trouble early on.

And without knowing how to tell if your engine block is cracked, you’ll be faced with a roadside breakdown, a possible engine fire, and more. Because when the engine block doesn’t work right, nothing works right. And engine malfunctions can easily lead to catastrophe.

How Do I Know If My Engine Block is Cracked?

Scrap car removal companies

Just like any sort of mechanical malfunction or failure, there will be signs indicating that your engine block is cracked. You just have to know what they are, how they present, and how long you have before your vehicle will no longer run.

Signs Your Engine Block Is Cracked Include:

  • Blue or black smoke coming from your engine
  • Leaking oil, burning of oil, dirty oil, or low oil levels
  • Frozen coolant in the radiator
  • Coolant/antifreeze and oil mixing (oil or coolant will be discoloured)
  • Engine overheating
  • White smoke coming from the exhaust pipes
  • Engine misfiring
  • Check engine light illuminated
  • Poor or worsening gas mileage
  • Engine hesitation upon acceleration

The best way to determine this is by visiting a professional mechanic, like our friends at Dan Hansen Auto Repair in Langley. They can provide professional diagnostics on any vehicle, to help you determine if your engine needs replacing.

Can You Still Drive a Car with a Cracked Engine Block?

Scrap Mazda Car

The short answer to this commonly asked question is, yes, you can. However, that really depends on what stage of engine failure you’re in, and what other components have been affected by the cracked engine block.

Most people that are driving aging vehicles or vehicles with high mileage will take their car to the mechanic for assessment. Once assessed, your mechanic can usually tell you how badly cracked your engine block is. Moreover, they’ll usually advise you as to what other signs to look out for when you’re getting close to final engine failure.

This is what typically happens with the scrap cars we buy in Metro Vancouver. Because most people don’t want to replace an engine on an aging or failing vehicle. So, instead, they choose the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap, after driving their car until it won’t drive anymore.

What Happens If I Don’t Get My Cracked Engine Block Fixed?

Junk car removal for cars with cracked engine blocks

Eventually your engine will fail. Because when an engine block is cracked, it causes coolant leaks, oil leaks, the mixing of oil and coolant, engine over heating as a result of coolant issues, a loss of power, and even has the potential for engine fires. Basically, it’s just a matter of time until your vehicle’s engine gives out.

Furthermore, driving a vehicle with a known issue can be a real liability. Because if your mechanic acknowledged that your engine block is cracked, and you continue to drive with it, you could be held responsible for any accidents that were the result of loss of power, or mechanical malfunction pertaining to your engine.

How to Check If Your Engine Block is Cracked

When assessing whether an engine block is cracked, one of the first methods you can utilize is a visual inspection. This approach helps to identify signs of failure or damage that may indicate a crack.

While this may be a job for someone with mechanical inclination, here’s a practical guide on how to conduct this inspection effectively if you’d like to try to do it yourself.

Ways to Check If Your Engine Block Is Cracked Include:

  • Clean the Engine Block: Begin by cleaning the engine block thoroughly to remove grease, dirt, and debris. Use a degreaser and a soft brush to ensure a clear view of the surface.
  • Look for External Cracks: Once the engine block is clean, inspect it for any visible cracks. Pay special attention to areas around the cylinder heads, freeze plugs, and oil pan. Cracks can appear as thin lines, so be vigilant.
  • Check for Oil or Coolant Leaks: Inspect for any signs of oil or coolant leaking from the engine block. Leaks can be indicative of a crack, especially if fluid is seeping from unfamiliar locations.
  • Examine the Cylinder Head: Inspect the area where the cylinder head meets the block for any signs of warping or damage. A warped head can lead to a breach in the block, causing it to crack.
  • Use a Magnifying Glass: If necessary, use a magnifying glass to examine small or hard-to-see areas for cracks that may not be immediately noticeable.

How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Cracked Engine Block?

Fixing cracked engine block

Repairing a cracked engine block can be quite costly. Right up there with engine replacement, transmission, replacement, or timing belt replacement; it’s one of the most expensive repairs to be done on a vehicle.

Depending on what type of vehicle you drive, the cost can vary. However, on an average car or SUV, repairing the engine block is usually around $1,000 – $4,000. And that’s only IF it can actually be repaired. Because sometimes a cracked engine block is beyond repair. When it is, that means replacement.

Replacing a cracked engine block means replacing your engine. And the cost to replace an engine is much higher than repairing a cracked engine block. In fact, depending on the type of vehicle you’re driving, replacing your engine can cost upwards of $8,000.

That’s why many people choose to scrap their vehicles that have a cracked engine block or dead engine with the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap instead. We pay MORE cash for scrap cars with failed engines and cracked engine blocks than any other scrap car buyers in BC.

Does My Car Need Antifreeze in Vancouver?

Cash for scrap cars with dead engines

As a professional scrap car removal company in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, we get asked a lot of questions. Not just your typical, “how much is my car worth?”, but many other vehicle related questions. Regardless, we are always happy to answer any questions from the general public. And one that usually pops up this time of year is “does my car need antifreeze if I live in the Lower Mainland?”.

Whether you’re driving something brand new, something that’s aging, or something that probably shouldn’t be on the road at this point, your vehicle will more than likely need antifreeze. However, if you get your vehicle routinely serviced, your mechanic should be checking all your fluid levels before sending you on your way.

But now that you know that your vehicle needs antifreeze, you might also be wondering what exactly is antifreeze used for? And what happens if your vehicle doesn’t have any or is running low? We’ll answer all that and more in today’s blog post.

What Does Antifreeze Do?

sell your car

Antifreeze, also known as coolant, is an additive that is quite critical for any vehicle. Just as vital as engine oil and transmission fluid, antifreeze has a specific function that prevents your car from enduring a catastrophic engine failure.

As we enter the start of November, Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley residents are already being hit with colder than usual temperatures. This is where older vehicles will definitely feel the strain of our winter season. Which is why antifreeze, or coolant, is so important.

However, technically, coolant is a premade mixture of antifreeze and water. Whereas antifreeze is simply a solution that you add to water to prevent freezing and boiling. Throughout this blog post, we’ll refer to antifreeze as both coolant and antifreeze, as with most newer vehicles, this is how it is referenced.

Regardless of whether or not you buy a premade mixture of antifreeze or coolant, or simply straight antifreeze, they both serve the same purpose, to protect your vehicle’s engine. You can find either fluid at any vehicle supply store such as Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, KMS Tools, and even big box stores throughout the Lower Mainland like Walmart, Superstore, and No Frills.

Why Do I Need to Put Antifreeze in My Car?

Scrap car buyers for cars without antifreeze

Water, as we know, freezes at 0 degrees Celsius. So, adding antifreeze to your vehicle will prevent freezing, which will also help promote proper movement of your vehicle’s complex parts.

It also prevents any water in your vehicle from excessive boiling, which prevents your engine from overheating. So, essentially, coolant and antifreeze regulate your vehicle’s overall temperatures, along with the cooling system itself.

The primary functions of antifreeze are:

  • Prevents water from freezing during winter temperatures
  • Raises the boiling point of coolant to prevent your engine from overheating
  • Helps protect the engine and many of its vital components from corrosion due to water and various fluid exposure
  • Prevents scale buildup throughout various engine components

As you can see from the list above, antifreeze/coolant is a very important part of how your vehicle operates smoothly. Moreover, without it, your vehicle could potentially not even be operable.

In fact, many of the older vehicles that we see in the scrap car removal industry have failed engines due to not only age, but a lack of fluids like oil or antifreeze. If you know this all too well, give us a call and see what your scrap car is worth. We LOVE buying vehicles with dead engines!

What Types of Vehicles Need Antifreeze?

Scrap car removal for Toyota

The fact of the matter is, that no matter what you drive, your vehicle will ultimately need coolant. However, the type of antifreeze that your car needs is mostly dependent on its age. There are various brands and types of antifreeze, which means that there is no universal antifreeze that can be used on all vehicles.

For vehicles from 1998 – present, they typically require a silicate-free organic acid technology comprised antifreeze. This is because newer vehicles get better protection from this type of antifreeze, and require it to prevent corrosion and excessive wear and tire on newly engineered components.

For vehicles older than 1998, they use the exact opposite of the newer antifreeze. Vehicles that are much older work best with antifreeze made with silicates and do not require organic acid technology.

How Do I Know What Type of Antifreeze My Vehicle Needs?

Cash for scrap cars Vancouver

A quick and easy way to discern what type of antifreeze you need is by looking at the coolant that is currently in your vehicle. However, if this is your first time changing or topping up your antifreeze, be sure to consult your owner’s manual. Or you can have your local mechanic do the first change and advise you on what type is required for your car.

The Colours Are as Follows:

  • Green: Inorganic Acid Technology
  • Orange: Organic Acid Technology
  • Yellow: Hybrid Acid Technology
  • Red: Extended Life Coolant Using Organic Acid Technology

Remember that this is a general guideline. Always, always, always, read the label, consult your user manual, and follow the directions that are specific to your vehicle. Especially if you purchased your vehicle used. You don’t know if the previous owner put the correct antifreeze in!

What Happens If I Don’t Put Antifreeze in My Car?

Scrap car removal in the Lower Mainland

Failing to put antifreeze in your vehicle is similar in consequences to when you fail to put oil in your car. Without proper levels of antifreeze, your car is susceptible to catastrophic engine failure.

Coolant is a vital substance that is mostly made up of ethylene glycol. It is responsible for regulating how the fluids in your vehicle react to different temperatures. If you don’t have antifreeze, not enough of it, or an improper ratio of it, your engine can either over heat or essentially freeze (well, the fluids can freeze. Thus, leading to engine seizure).

Some people simply poor water into the coolant reservoir when they are travelling and unable to top up their coolant levels with actual antifreeze. However, this may work momentarily, but it will only lead to further problems within the engine. Water freezes and boils much easily than water with antifreeze, so it’s critical you use coolant all the time.

Some people even try to mix different types of antifreeze because, in a pinch, you use whatever you have access to. If that’s the case, you need to have your antifreeze completely swapped out to what should be in your vehicle. Failure to do so can really damage your engine and leave you with a bigger problem than just overheating.

How Do You Know If You Need Antifreeze?

Cars without Antifreeze

Because coolant is so crucial in your vehicle, you’ll definitely know when you don’t have it and whether or not you need it. Additionally, you’ll be able to tell if the ratio of coolant to water is correct, depending on the climate you live in and what time of year it is there.

When you live in Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley, you know that our weather is unpredictable. We can have both snow and t-shirt weather all on the same day. And just like the recent storm we had on November 4th, 2024 that really shook the Lower Mainland, we can get hit unexpectedly with some really extreme weather conditions. When you don’t have enough coolant, your vehicle will tell you.

Signs You Don’t Have Antifreeze (or enough of it) Include:

  1. Your temperature gauge is hotter than usual
  2. You have coloured fluid or puddles underneath your vehicle, indicating a leak
  3. A grinding noise coming from the engine when idling or driving your car
  4. Darker coolant colour than usual. Green is a darker green, orange is almost brown, etc
  5. A distinct burning smell during or after driving (especially longer trips)
  6. Various and increasing engine troubles
Checking Antifreeze or Coolant Levels

You can buy tester kits to check the ratio of coolant to water in your vehicle. However, the most foolproof way to ensure that you’ve got enough antifreeze in your vehicle’s system is to have a professional check it out at every oil change, like the good people at Valvoline Express Care in Maple Ridge.

How Do I Know If I Need to Replace My Engine?

cash-for-scrap-cars-with-bad-transmissions

Much like any sort of mechanical failure on a vehicle, there will be signs and symptoms when your engine is on its way out. Knowing what signs and symptoms to look, listen, and even smell for can be critical in early diagnosis. This will help you make a quick and informed decision about potentially scrapping your car or if you should repair it.

Signs Your Engine Needs Replacing Include:

  • Check engine light is on
  • Knocking, thumping, or clunking coming from the engine
  • Hesitation
  • Poor performance
  • Worsening gas mileage
  • Odd smells coming from under the hood
  • Discoloured smoke coming from your tailpipe(s)
  • Metal shavings in your oil
  • Leaking or burning oil
  • Frequent or intermittent stalling
  • Overheating

Knowing what to look for is so important when deciding whether or not it’s time to scrap your car. However, some of these symptoms can also be indicators of other problems. So, your best bet is to have your vehicle checked out by a professional mechanic.

What’s the Difference Between Brake Pads & Rotors?

The Difference Between Brake Pads & Rotors

No matter what type of vehicle you drive in Metro Vancouver, brake problems happen to all of us. Whether your car is new, old, aging, or has the fanciest and most expensive brakes that money can buy, you’ll experience brake wear and tear no matter what you do. And knowing what the difference between brake pads and rotors can be vital in knowing whether your brakes need immediate attention or not.

When your brakes start to fail, they bring with them all kinds of signs and symptoms. Knowing what to look and listen for is critical in knowing how much drive time you have left on your brakes. Which ultimately means knowing how safe you are on the road.

In today’s blog post, we’ll go into detail about the difference between brake pads and rotors, as well as many other brake system failure symptoms to be on the lookout for. And as a professional scrap car removal company serving the Lower Mainland since 2005, we’ve seen it all. So, allow us to share some of our knowledge with you today, and help keep yourself (and others) a little bit safe on the road.

Do Brake Rotors and Pads Do the Same Thing?

seized-car-brakes

Brake pads and rotors work together to stop your car, but they are different parts. Brake pads are the components that make contact with the rotors to create the friction needed to stop the vehicle. They are typically made of materials like ceramic, metal, or organic compounds. When you press the brake pedal, the caliper clamps the brake pads onto the rotor.

Rotors (or brake discs) are the large metal discs that sit behind your wheels. The rotors are what the brake pads press against to stop the wheels from turning. They are usually made of cast iron or a composite material.

Brake pads are expendable and will wear down over time due to the friction, while rotors can last longer but may need to be resurfaced or replaced if they get too worn or damaged.

How Do You Know If You Need New Rotors on Your Car?

Scrap my car

One of the most common signs that you need more than brake pads on your car is a shaky steering wheel. When rotors wear down, they tend to get gouges in them.

These gouges can happen due to uneven wear and tear, overuse, or even simply debris that has in your braking components. However, they can also be the product of improperly installed brake pads, defective brake pads, or corrosion or rust.

This is most commonly seen on vehicles that are older, are aging, or have been sitting for a long time. In fact, many of the older vehicles we buy that have just been left to sit have brake systems that are frozen. This makes the scrap car removal process tougher, as it’s hard to move a vehicle that can’t move. However, we are experts in our field and we can get even the toughest car out of the toughest spot!

This is one of the reasons Vancouverites and Fraser Valley-ians choose our scrap car removal services. They know that no matter where their vehicle is, what’s wrong with it, or how tough it is to extract, they’ll always get free towing, same day scrap car removal, and MORE cash for scrap cars than the other guys!

How Do You Know If You Need New Brakes on a Car?

Scrap car removal

Much like anything, there are always signs when any part of your braking system is starting to fail.

Signs You Need New Brakes

  • Squealing
  • Screeching
  • Grinding
  • New or worsening vibration
  • Car pulling to one side
  • New or worsening stopping power
  • Shaking steering wheel
  • Brake warning light, ABS light, or Check Engine Light comes on
  • Spongy feeling brakes
  • Leaking brake fluid
  • Excessive mileage on the same set of brake pads and rotors

As you can see, there are many signs and symptoms that your brakes need replacing. However, knowing whether or not you need simply brake pads or brake pads and rotors is a job for a professional.

When the first signs of failing brakes appear, be sure to visit the good people at Budget Brake and Muffler Auto Repair for an in-depth inspection. They can tell you if the squealing is just a product of dust or dirt on your brakes. Or if you need to get your brake pads or rotors (or both!) replaced.

Are Rotors and Disc Brakes the Same Thing?

A commonly asked question is if disc brakes are the same thing as rotors because the two sound like very similar systems. However, that is not the case because they are not the same thing at all.

Disc brakes are the entire system that includes the brake pads, calipers, and rotors. The rotor is just one part of any braking system, including a disc brake system. Moreover, it’s the disc part that the pads clamp onto to create friction and slow down the car. So, while the rotor is part of the disc brake system, the terms aren’t interchangeable. They simply work together to ensure optimal stopping power.

brakes, rotors, and disc brakes

While disc brakes are incredibly more common on today’s vehicles (and any more modern vehicle), some older vehicles use what’s called “drum brakes”. Drum brakes have brake shoes that press outward against a spinning drum to create friction and stop the vehicle. Disc brakes are generally more efficient and provide better stopping power. This is why they’re more common on modern cars, especially on the front wheels. Drum brakes can still be found on some rear wheels, however, even in newer models.

What Should I Do If I Need a Complete Brake Job?

Scrap Car Removal Burnaby

Knowing what needs replacing and what doesn’t is one of the reasons people need a professional mechanic to diagnose their vehicle. Typically, when a vehicle is aging and needs a complete brake job, people will often scrap their car instead of fix it. The cost usually outweighs the remaining value in their vehicle. And when this happens, they turn to the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap.

Top 10 Most Common Car Problems

cash-for-scrap-cars-with-bad-transmissions

As vehicles age, it’s not uncommon for mechanical issues to pop up more frequently than they once did before. This is due in part to overall wear and tear based on how often you use your vehicle, what you use it for, and how well you have kept up on its routine maintenance over the years.

Despite our every effort to reduce the amount of mechanical issues we have on our older vehicles, they are unfortunately, inevitable. That’s why when your car or truck has reached a certain age, you should considering whether or not doing heft repairs is really worth the time and money.

For everything that can’t be fixed, isn’t worth fixing, or anything in between, there’s More Cash For Scrap. We offer MORE cash for scrap cars than any other scrap car removal company in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Top 10 Most Common Mechanical Issues on a Car

cash-for-scrap-cars

Vehicles don’t have to be old to start experiencing frequent mechanical issues. Some are newer vehicles, but high a really high number of kilometres on them. While others are not that old, but are prone to recalls and mechanical failures, which have a tendency to ripple throughout the vehicle for a variety of reasons.

Knowing what the most common car problems are, how to spot them, and what to do about them is critical in deciding whether or not to scrap your car or sell it.

The Most Common Mechanical Issues on Vehicles Are:

1. Engine Problems

Definitely the biggest problem people experience with older vehicles is an engine issue. The most common engine problem being overheating.

Engine overheating usually occurs as the result of another problem such as coolant leaks, a malfunctioning thermostat, a problem with your water pump, or low oil caused by burning or leaking oil.

sell-my-car

All of these smaller problems can created one really big and expensive problem to repair. So, if you’ve noticed your oil levels are low, or that you have puddles under your car when parked, get your vehicle into a professional mechanic for an inspection. The trick to saving yourself thousands of dollars in repair is catching engine issues early.

In fact, many of the scrap cars we buy are the result of engine problems. Whether it’s a dead engine, an engine that’s burning oil or has several leaks, or simply isn’t firing right. Fortunately for our customers, we always pay MORE cash for scrap cars than anyone in Vancouver!

2.Brake Problems

Brake issues can happen to even the most well-maintained vehicle. However, it’s a common problem on vehicles with a higher number of kilometres, or vehicles that are older.

Although brake replacement and maintenance are a regular part of vehicle upkeep, when an essential repair is needed, it can be costly. Signs that you need to have your brakes service include:

  • Squealing
  • Grinding
  • Shaking while breaking
  • Squeaking
  • Thumping
  • Reduced braking power
  • Brakes that stick
  • ABS light is on
  • Check engine light is on

Another sign that something could be wrong with your brakes is if your e-brake isn’t supporting the weight of your vehicle well while parked on hills. When one thing goes, more usually follows. So, do yourself a favour and don’t ignore the signs of brake problems when they first present themselves.

3. Malfunctioning or Failed Starter

car-ignition-switch

For whatever reason, it seems like the starter always goes when we are caught in one of Vancouver’s freak rainstorms, or when we are trying to leave a Christmas party before the snow gets too bad to drive.

Fortunately, there are signs and symptoms to watch our for when your starter is starting to go. Knowing what to look for is key in preventing yourself from being stranded at the most inopportune times.

Signs Your Starter is Going:

  • There’s a delay from when you turn the ignition key, to when your vehicle actually begins to start
  • You periodically only get a clicking sound instead of the sound of start up
  • A grinding or whining noise when you turn the key to start your car
  • The obvious, your engine not actually starting
  • Smoke and/grinding when starting the motor

Starters isn’t exactly a big issue when it comes to getting it repaired or replaced, but it’s usually a sign that your vehicle is aging, and things are starting to fail. When you’ve got a lot of miles on your car, and age stacked against it as well, it may be time to consider scrapping your car and getting a new one. More Cash For Scrap are the ones to call because we always pay MORE cash for scrap cars than any other scrap car removal company in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

4. Exhaust System Issues

cash for scrap cars

We’ve all heard an extremely loud vehicle racing down the street at one point or another. And sometimes, what we expect isn’t what shows up. What may sound like a loud powerful vehicle, can actually be something small, old, and experiencing exhaust system issues.

Additionally, some people actually get their vehicles to sound like that on purpose, so it may be an intended exhaust system issue! Either way, exhaust system issues are quite common, and need a professional mechanic to evaluate it, like our friends at Minit Tune & Brake in Kitsilano.

Here are some of the most common signs that your exhaust system needs some attention:

1.Rust – Rust leads to corrosion which leads to leaks. You can buy a spray to help protect your vehicle’s exhaust system from developing excessive rust prematurely. For those who drive more often and in wetter weather (like Metro Vancouver), you are more prone to rust on your exhaust system.

2.Leaks – As stated a moment ago, leaks can be caused by rust. They can also be caused by damage or loose components. Keeping your exhaust system free of leaks means keeping up on regular routine maintenance. Just like you try to avoid skipping your doctor’s visits, avoid skipping your car’s mechanic’s visits.

3.Block Catalytic Converter – A block converter can cause all kinds of issues with your vehicle. From poor performance and a serious lack of power to toxic fumes leaking into your cabin. If you start noticing a rotten egg type of smell in your car while driving, open your window, and get your car to a mechanic a.s.a.p.

4.Loose Mounts and/or Brackets – While these are necessarily catastrophic at the onset, they can lead to major repairs if not addressed in time. Fortunately, a loose bracket or mount is quite easy to notice as you’ll hear a rattling sound that is very prominent while driving.

5. Malfunctioning Sensors

It’s not unusual for a sensor to go on your car. It’s a delicate component that while small, does a lot for our car.

Sensors like the Throttle Position Sensor, or TPS for short, are responsible for controlling your vehicle’s speed. If you notice erratic acceleration, rough idling, or random surges while driving, it could be that your TPS needs replacing.

Other sensors like your O2 sensor are responsible for controlling your vehicle’s air to fuel ratio. When the sensor is malfunctioning, you’ll notice rough idles, poor engine performance, and a noticeable decrease in fuel economy. When you are experiencing any of these issues, get your car checked sooner rather than later.

6. Alternator Issues & Electrical Problems

This is a very common issue, and also one of the most dreaded for drivers and mechanics alike. When you experience electrical problems of any kind on a vehicle, it can be tough to diagnose. One thing leads to another which leads to another, and finding the source of the problem can be a nightmare. You’ll end up paying more in labour costs to resolve the issue than you ever will on parts.

Alternator-Replacement

Even a standard alternator replacement isn’t what it used to be. Once upon a time you could replace an alternator for a couple hundred dollars. Now, some vehicles cost upwards of $1800 to replace the alternator, and that’s IF that is the source of your electrical problems.

We see so many vehicles that come through our scrap car removal company that were perfectly good cars, until they suffered an electrical failure. If you are one of the unfortunate people to have a car with electrical issues, talk to our team today. We can offer you MORE cash than any other local scrap car buyers in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

7. Radiator Leaks

head-gasket-noises

If you’re noticing random leaks that are green or orange, you could have a radiator leak. Also, if you notice your vehicle’s temperature gauge rising and the coolant levels dropping, you may need to get it replaced.

Without getting your radiator serviced at the first sign of trouble, you could end up with a dead engine due to overheating issues. The radiator is a vital part of your vehicle’s cooling system, and without it, your car can’t run properly.

Once your radiator goes, It only takes a few minutes for your vehicle’s engine to overheat. If you’re driving along and suddenly notice that your car’s temperature is steadily climbing, pull over immediately and allow your vehicle to cool down. Then, get it into a mechanic promptly.

8. Air Conditioning Problems

This is a very common problem that most of us won’t even address until it’s 40 degrees out in the midst of August in Metro Vancouver.

With annual forest fires now being a thing, you’d think the majority of us would be prepared to deal with excessive heat. Yet many people still fail to have their car air conditioning serviced before it’s too late.

Air conditioning problems can be very expensive to repair, or they can also be on the simpler side. It takes a professional to know exactly what needs replacing or repairing. Repairs can run anywhere from $300 all the way up to $3,000 for a complete air conditioning replacement on a vehicle.

If you’re experiencing any kind of A/C problems on an older vehicle and are expecting a massive bill from your mechanic to fix it, sell your car to us instead. We always pay MORE cash for cars with air conditioning problems than any other scrap car removal companies in the Lower Mainland.

9. Worsening Gas Mileage

When you buy a vehicle brand new off the lot, the salesman will generally promote the exceptional gas mileage it gets, along with any other bonuses that come from its fuel economy. However, as a vehicle ages, the gas mileage slowly starts dropping.

What was once 7.0L/100km is now easily 8.5L/100km in the city, and highway mileage is nowhere near what it used to be. That’s because a vehicle’s engine experiences build up in a variety of places including injectors, valves, pistons, and even cylinder walls.

Also, other unknown mechanical issues can affect your fuel consumption. Things like:

  • Malfunctioning sensors
  • Exhaust system issues
  • Clogged oil filter or fuel filter
  • Clogged or dirty fuel injectors
  • Clogged or dirty air filter
  • Damage to your piston rings
  • Wrong engine oil in your car
  • Brake issues like stuck brakes

If you have noticed that you’ve been spending more at the pump than you once did, you may need to get your vehicle checked for possible mechanical issues that could be contributing to reduced gas mileage.

10. Battery Issues

Without your car’s battery, your vehicle simply wouldn’t run. It works in synch with your car’s alternator to provide your vehicle and all the electrical components with electricity. So, needless to say, if your battery isn’t working correctly, neither will your car.

Corrosion on the connectors is a very common issue that can cause your battery to stop working properly, or at all. Corrosion usually happens when battery acid gets on the connectors and along the top of the battery. This eats away at the connectors and makes it impossible for the electricity to get through.

Most batteries are relatively inexpensive to replace, but some vehicles’ batteries cost upwards of $400. If you have the option to get a warranty with your battery purchase, do so. It could save you money in the long run.
