What Happens When Your Car Sits Too Long?

Scrap Honda Civic

Cars are meant to be driven. But usually, when we travel a lot for long periods, either for vacation, study, or work, we leave our car behind. And sometimes, we just don’t use our car anymore simply because it’s old. While others have issues that haven’t been addressed. Because of this, our vehicle can be left to sit. But what happens when your car sits too long anyways?

It today’s blog post, we’ll go over what to expect from a stagnant vehicle that is aging and has mechanical defects. We’ll talk about what things physically can decline quickly, what mechanical deficits to expect from inactivity, and what you can do if you own an aging vehicle that has been sitting longer than it was every on the road.

At More Cash For Scrap, we have been providing scrap car removal services throughout Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley since 2005. And no one pays MORE cash for scrap cars than we do. We have seen it all when it comes to junk vehicles. And today’s blog post is written from our own personal and professional experiences in the scrap car removal industry.

What Can Happen to a Car After Sitting Too Long?

junk car buyers

Just like we need to move to stay healthy, a car needs to be driven to work properly. When a person just sits around, he could feel weak and stiff. That’s exactly the same for cars. When it sits for a long time, its parts start to break down or get stuck.

First of all, your car could develop battery issues. We know that even when off, your car has “parasitic drains” from onboard electronics. And when it’s not driven for a long time, the alternator can’t recharge the battery. If that happens, the battery could die completely. It’s more than just an inconvenience; your car can suffer permanent damage because of a dead battery.

Additionally, if your car sits in one place for so long, it can have tire issues. Since it’s not moving, the car’s weight is constantly on one spot of your tire. It can cause flat spots that can permanently damage the tire’s structure. And it often requires expensive replacements!

Is It Bad for a Car To Sit for a Long Time?

Scrap car removal in strawberry hill, surrey

The gasoline in your car’s fuel tank can also break down over time and turn into sticky, varnish-like substance. This substance can clog fuel lines, injectors, and the fuel pump. And this makes your car impossible to start.

And the worst? Mechanical problems! These are perhaps the most expensive to fix. Inside the car, old gas turns sticky, which clog lines. Brake parts rust and get stuck. Even the engine and other moving parts can suffer from lack of use. They can seize or wear out quickly when you finally try to drive. Really, a lot of things can go wrong when you leave your car undriven for a long time!

Fortunately, at More Cash For Scrap, we pay MORE cash for cars that have been sitting for a long time. Vehicles with seized engines, blown head gaskets, failed transmissions, and seized brakes are all worth MORE when you choose our scrap car removal services.

How Long is “Too Long”?

scrap junk, old and used vehicles

There’s no definite time on how long your car can sit without problems. That depends on its age and current condition , as well as how hot or humid the are that it’s stored in is. Additionally, colder or wetter climates will also have a negative impact on a vehicle that is left outdoors for long periods of time.

Usually, leaving your car for a few days to a week won’t cause any problems. But after two to four weeks, your battery might die due to hidden power drains. This is especially common on older vehicles or vehicles with high mileage.

If it sits for a few months, expect a dead battery, flat spots on tires, and fuel starting to turn into a sticky mess within the gas tank. Brakes will also likely begin to rust and/or seize up, along with any known leaks worsening from prolonged outdoor exposure.

And beyond six months, serious and expensive damage is almost guaranteed without proper care. Expect rust on the body and vital parts, potential pest infestations including the chewing of wires, and degraded fluids, hoses, and belts.

Signs that Your Undriven Car is In Trouble

Some signs are easy to notice—-rust, flat or deflated tires, no lights or power, or even a strong moldy or gas smell. But the most damaging issues are often hidden and need a closer look or a mechanic’s assessment to find out.

Here are some signs your car is in trouble:

Contaminated or Degraded Fluids:

You can’t see the gas turning gooey or the oil breaking down inside. These hidden changes hurt your engine and brakes. You might only find out when the car won’t start or when liquids leak out.

Seized Brake Components:

Rust can glue brake pads to the wheels. You won’t see this from the outside, but it will stop your wheels from turning or make the car pull to one side when you try to drive.

Pest Damage:

Mice or bugs can build nests and chew wires. You might only see droppings, or find out when the car won’t start or warning lights come on.

Corroded Fuel Lines/Tank:

Hidden rust inside the fuel tank or lines can cause leaks or blockages that you won’t spot until there’s a big problem.

Dry Rot on Hoses and Belts:

Rubber parts dry out and crack when not used. Some are hidden and can break suddenly when you try to start the car, causing major engine trouble.

Engine & Transmission Problems:

When the car sits, the inside parts of the engine and transmission don’t get lubricated properly. They can rust, get gunked up, or even get stuck. Then, the car just won’t move or work right.

Electrical Headaches:

Wires can get rusty from moisture, even without pests. This can cause things like blown fuses or features just stopping. Finding and fixing these electrical issues can be a real pain.

The sad truth? Most of these hidden problems usually mean really expensive fixes. What looks like a small repair can quickly turn into a bill for thousands of dollars. That’s because mechanics often have to dig deep to find the issue, replace stuck parts, or fix bad rust and wiring.

We Pay MORE Cash for Cars With Mechanical Failure

At the end of the day, the longer your car sits idle, the more likely you are to face, not only an inconvenience, but a big repair bill that might outweigh the car’s value. Which is why so many Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley residents turn to the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap.

Why is My Car Heater Blowing Cold Air?

car-heater-blowing-cold-air

For any of you Lower Mainland residents who have endured our harsh Canadian winters without owning a vehicle, you know just how deep set our winter chills can be. A simple 20 minutes outside in the cold and you’re shivering for the rest of the night it seems.

However, owning a vehicle doesn’t always mean staying warm and dry during the winter months. Especially when your heater vents are pumping out cold air when your temperature is turned all the way to maximum hot.

There are a number of reasons why your car vents may be blowing cold air instead of hot. We will cover the different reasons why that might be in this blogpost, and how to resolve them.

Car Vents Blowing Cold Air When Heat Is On

When you first start up your vehicle on a cold winter’s day, it’s expected that it will take a few minutes for the car to warm up. Thus, it will take a few minutes for the warm air to start filling your vehicle. However, if it’s been more than 10 minutes (depending on the outside temperature) and your vehicle is still blowing cold air, there could be an issue with your heating system.

The Most Common Reasons for Cold Air Instead of Hot Are:

  • Lower than normal coolant levels
  • Malfunctioning heater controls
  • Failed or malfunctioning thermostat
  • Clogged heater core
  • Water leaks
  • Broken blend door actuator

Your vehicle’s heating system is comprised of various components and systems that all work cohesively to produce either hot or cold air, depending on your temperature selection.

Possible Signs Your Car Heater Needs Servicing

cash-for-cars

If you’ve noticed that your vehicle doesn’t warm up as quickly as it used to on cold days, you may need to have it serviced.

Additionally, if you notice that the air coming through your heater vents is colder than it is hot, or isn’t as warm as it once was, you may need some of your car’s heating system assessed by a mechanic.

Why Does My Car’s Heater Blow Cold Air Instead of Hot?

Things like the radiator, coolant, water pump, and thermostat must all work properly and in unison to provide accurate heat or cooling control in your vehicle.

When even one of these components starts failing, your vehicle’s climate control will fail to work properly. Thus, producing cold air instead of hot. Similarly, your vehicle can also produce too hot of a temperature as a result of malfunctions as well.

Low Coolant Levels

sell-my-car

If you notice cold air blowing out of your car’s vents when you’ve got it set to hot, it could be caused by low coolant levels. Check your coolant, or have a mechanic check it if you’re not that familiar with vehicle maintenance. This is one of the most common reasons that people have reduced heat capabilities in their vehicle’s heaters.

Failed or Malfunctioning Thermostat

Just like in your homes heating system, every vehicle has a thermostat to regulate and operate the temperature settings in your car.

If your thermostat is failing or has already failed, you may notice that the air coming from your vents is either very cold, or excessively hot. This is because without a thermostat to regulate the appropriate temperature that you’ve selected, your heater will typically go to one extreme or the other (hot or cold).

The thermostat is also responsible for making sure that your vehicle heats up or cools down in a timely manner. When it fails, it can cause your engine to not reach the appropriate working temperate at all. Thus, creating a malfunctioning heating system as a result.

Faulty or Clogged Heater Core

The heater core is exactly what it sounds like; the very component that heats the air that comes out of your car’s heater vents.

When your heater core is failing, has failed, or is simply clogged, it can prevent the already heated air from entering your vehicle’s cabin. This is why you’ll notice a drastic drop in the temperature of the heat settings you’ve selected.

car-heater-clogged

Broken Blend Door Actuator

The blend door actuator may sound super futuristic and fancy, but in reality, it is simply the component that is responsible for directing the flow of air into your car.

This means, that even if your heater core isn’t failing, and your thermostat is fine, the heated air can’t be directed appropriately, which results in a drop in temperature in your vehicle.

This is why it’s important to have a professional mechanic assess your vehicle for any type of temperature fluctuation. They can properly discern if you are in need of a major repair, or a minor one.

For any major heating issues that need repairing, you need to consider the age and value of your car before committing to a large mechanic’s bill. This is when many people turn to the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap.

We buy vehicles with heating issues, mechanical issues, and electrical problems. And we always pay MORE cash for scrap cars than the other guys!

Bad Blower Motor

The blower motor is exactly what it sounds like. It blows the air into your vehicle’s cabin. When the blower isn’t functioning properly, it can limit or stop the flow of air through your vehicle’s air vents.

This symptom of a bad blower motor will usually first appear like a heating issue, as the temperature doesn’t feel as warm as it should. However, the real problem isn’t the heating system itself, but the blower that aids in directly the flow and strength of flow into your car.

Water Leaks

Water leaks are usually a pretty significant sign that your heating system needs attention. Although it’s normal to see some water on the ground under your vehicle particularly during summer months when A/C is used frequently, seeing large amounts daily isn’t a good sign.

Water drips from under your car as a result of condensation from the heating and cooling system of your car. But when it starts to be excessive and regular, there could be an issue.

As water leaks while the heater is running usually signifies that there is a leak somewhere in a hose. This causes coolant levels to drop as well, which can make your engine overheat. When your engine isn’t functioning properly, your heating system will often follow.

If you notice a drop in temperature coupled with pools of water under your car, you may be in for a very serious repair bill.

How Does a Car Heating System Work?

car-heating-system

The heating system of any vehicle is a complex system that has many working parts within it. Each component is equally important in maintaining a properly functioning heating system. This is why it’s always recommended that you have a professional mechanic assess and repair your car when something to do with the heating system appears to be failing.

  1. Hot engine coolant circulates through the heater core, promoting the heating of air into your vehicle’s cabin.
  2. The blower (or fan) in front of your heater core pushes the air into the heater core, thus raising the temperature of the air that will enter through your car vents.
  3. The blend door actuator then directs the heated air to the appropriate place, depending on your selected settings.
  4. The heater fan then blows the air directly into the selected aread of your car, based off of what you’ve selected it to do through your heater controls.
  5. The heater core uses the coolant from the cylinder head and returns it directly to the pump.

When you’re faced with a major repair like a new engine, a repair or replacement of one or several of your heating system components, you have to properly assess whether or not it’s worth the investment.

If you drive an older vehicle, or one that has really high kilometres due to daily commuting, you may want to consider buying a newer vehicle, instead of repairing your current one.

Is Mould in a Car Dangerous?

As a general rule of thumb, exposure to moulds of any kind is typically not a great thing for human health.

And while most are harmless for the most part, they can still cause breathing problems, allergies, and other minor irritations to humans, especially if it’s in your car.

How Bad is Mould in a Car for You?

When you are sitting in a car for hours on end, like many of us do to commute for work, you’re breathing in whatever is inside your vehicle. Regardless of whether or not you change your cabin air filter regularly, or if you keep your fan turned on to circulate, there are pollutants that we are exposed to everywhere around us.

The last thing you want to do is add to that is mould inside your car. So, if you have any minor leaks that you haven’t had fixed or notice that weather stripping is looking a little worn and not fitting the way it used to, you should get your vehicle checked out by a mechanic.

What Causes Mold in Cars?

mouldy-car

One of the things we encounter a lot in older vehicles that people are scrapping is mould. Mould happens from vehicles sitting outside too long, as condensation forms inside and breeds mould and mildew.

Mould also occurs when vehicles have leaks in their weather stripping around the windows, or around the trunk. This can even happen from having cracks in the windows or windshield that was never repaired and has worsened over the years.

Ultimately, the number one cause of mould in cars is exposure to the outdoors for prolonged periods of time, as well as leaks.

If you can park your car indoors more often than not, we highly recommend this to protect your vehicle from ever getting a case of mould. Alternatively, you can use a good quality car cover that’s made to protect vehicles that are parked outside from rain and snow.

Car Mould Caused by Flooding

Although most mould comes from exposure to minor leaks, British Columbia is also famous for frequent rainfall and mass flooding (especially over the past couple of years). So, naturally, many vehicle owners who park their cars outside experienced water damage due to flooding.

Some were covered under insurance, some were not. For many owners, older vehicles were written off by ICBC because the damage caused by the water was so extensive that it cost more to repair the car than replace it.

For those situations and any like it, More Cash For Scrap was able to help. As many consumers didn’t have the proper coverage on their vehicles to cover flood damage, they were left with nothing but a pile of scrap.

car-flooded

Fortunately for them, More Cash For Scrap pays cash for damaged cars. Plus, we offer free towing services, same day scrap car removal, and MORE cash for cars than any other local scrap car buyers in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

What Happens If You Get Mould in Your Car?

To the average person, breathing in mould isn’t a be all end all kind of scenario. But if you suffer from a weakened immune system, have heart conditions, suffer from asthma, COPD, or any other type of breathing disorder, prolonged exposure to mould in your car could cause some serious health problems, including cancer.

Some of the health problems you could experience from mould in your car include:

  • Lung infections
  • Bronchitis
  • Astha
  • Chronic coughing or wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat
  • Sleep apnea
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Skin irritations

Some people also have unknown allergic reactions that form as they get older. This can be the result of long-term mould exposure, or something new that has a sudden onset. Either way, being around mould for extended periods of time will only aggravate whatever allergy or irritation you’re suffering from.

How Do I Know if I Have Mould in My Car?

cash-for-scrap-cars

Mould is pretty easy to spot if you have it, but sometimes it can hide under fabrics like your vehicle’s headliner, your interior carpet, or even inside or around the bottom of your seats.

The most common place you’ll find mould in your car, however, is very close to the source of the moisture. If you know for certain that you have a crack in the upper part of your windshield, and that it’s been there for quite some time, you should look around the source for possible mould.

Usually mould in your car is black, but it can also be green, brown, white, or a sort of rust colour, depending on what kind of other chemicals or fluids it comes into contact with.

How Do I Get Rid of Mould in My Car?

For the majority of us, when we see mould starting to form inside our vehicle, we quickly grab a rag and some spray cleaner and wipe away any evidence of it. But when it comes to properly removing mould from our vehicle, is that really the best way to do it?

Step 1:

To begin with, the first thing you should do before removing mould from your car is make sure that you are properly protected. That means wearing a mask, gloves, and if you have them, goggles. This may sound a bit overkill for the simple removal of mould, but mould is more than just gross, it’s bad for your health.

When you clean up mould with any kind of solvent, you’re spraying mould at the surface. And because mould is comprised of spores, some of those spores get spread into the air after misting.

Step 2:

Prepare your car for cleaning. This means removing any items from the seats, floor, and open console compartments. Be sure to throw away anything that has mould growth on it, or is wet from the source of the mould.

Step 3:

Fill a spray bottle with distilled vinegar or a diluted bleach solution. Both vinegar and bleach are excellent for removing mould from anything and are much less harmful than professional mould cleaning products.

Just be careful when using bleach to clean the mould out of your car because it can damage certain hard surfaces and cause discolouration of nearly every fabric.

Step 4:

Spray directly onto the surfaces and areas with mould, while fully saturating the area. Use a scrub brush with coarse bristles to scrub the affected area. Scrub until no further evidence of mould remains.

You may notice some permanent staining caused by the mould, depending on the length of time it was there. As long as you’ve neutralized the mouldy areas as much as possible with the cleaner, it should be fine going forward.

Step 5:

Dry your car out thoroughly after cleaning and removing the mould from the interior. Also, ensure that any leaks which caused the mould to form are properly repaired. Any leaky seals or weather stripping should also be replaced.

Use a fan to dry the inside of your car, but also leave your windows open slightly to help air dry all fabrics inside the car. If you park outdoors, be sure you do this on a warm sunny day. If you have a private garage, try using a space heater to help expedite the drying process.

How to Stop Wasting Money on Your Vehicle

Wait, what? I’m wasting money on my vehicle? You bet you are! But many of us aren’t even aware that we are pointlessly spending money on something that truly isn’t worth it.

When-to-Sell-Your-Car

When you’ve got a commuter car that saves on gas, but constantly needs repairs, you really aren’t saving anything at all.

Or when you’ve got a car that “is in really great shape, aside from it needing a new transmission”, it’s not really in good shape.

So, is it really worth it to do such a major repair on an older vehicle? Or perhaps one that isn’t old, but has high kilometers? Well, this blog is here to help answer those questions, along with many others. If you want to stop emptying your pockets during times of massive inflation, continue reading…

Am I Spending Too Much Money on My Car?

When you’ve owned a vehicle for a long time, it can be hard to let go. Even when it’s costing more money that it’s worth, many of us hang on for far too long. But why?

Is it because we like wasting money on a lost cause? Or maybe it’s because we have so many memories associated with our vehicle? Or perhaps it’s just because we don’t honestly know when we should pull the plug on a dying car. All in all, we’ve all been guilty of putting way too much money into our vehicles just to keep them running.

When is the Right Time to Sell My Car?

There comes a point when you need to stop dumping every penny you have into your car. However, it can be hard to know when exactly you should sell it. So, how do you know when it’s the right time? There are a few different ways to know when to give up the goose.

1.Frequent Mechanic Trips

Vehicles, in a way, are like humans; they need regular check-ups to stay healthy. However, if you spend more money on repairs than maintenance, it could be time to sell. If you find that your car is getting repaired more than it’s getting maintained, it could be a sign that it’s ending its life cycle. Its normal to have the odd repair needed as vehicles age, but too many repairs can mean that the whole vehicle is on its way out.

Sell-Your-Car-For-Cash

The next time your car is in the shop, you should ask your mechanic to perform a full check on your car.

This will give you a good indication of what potential repairs are up next, and whether or not you should invest more money into it.

Alternatively, BCAA offers a 100-point inspection on used vehicles for consumers as well. It’s relatively inexpensive, and they’ll provide you with a list of ‘Coming Attractions”. This way, you’ll know what could be on it’s way out next.

2.The Cost of Repairs is More Than the Value of Your Car

It’s never enjoyable to get hit with a massive repair bill at the mechanics. However, sometimes we are spending much more than we should. If you’ve got an older vehicle, especially one with other issues, spending a fortune on a major repair could be a waste of your money.

Scrap-Your-Car-For-Cash

For example, if you have a 1994 Dodge Neon that needs a new transmission, it would be a better idea to sell it to a scrap car removal company like us, instead of fixing it. Why? Because the cost of a new tranny is thousands of dollars, and the vehicle itself isn’t worth that much.

Also, if you’ve got a different major repair like a blown head gasket, or need a timing belt replacement after the valves have been bent, you also need to consider your vehicle’s worth. Often times, people think it’s cheaper to repair a vehicle than replace it, but that’s a common misconception. There are many decent used vehicles out there for less than the cost of replacing a transmission or engine.

3.Your Vehicle No Longer Covers Your Needs

We’ve already touched base on the fact that many people think buying a new vehicle is more expensive than repairing it. However, sometimes there is nothing mechanically wrong with our car, but it simply isn’t covering our needs.

Used-Vehicle-Buying-Service

Perhaps when you first bought your vehicle, it was with the intent that you’d be using it primarily for commuting. However, now you’ve got a family and it just isn’t covering all the bases. Now you need something with more seating, bigger cargo space, and is still good on gas mileage.

So, you’d switch to a minivan or SUV, right? Many people try to hold out as long as possible before making the switch. They think that if they don’t have to fork out money right away, they’re saving it.

Aren’t I Saving Money By Not Buying a New Car Though?

Although in some respects this is true, it’s not the case with used cars. The longer you drive a used vehicle, the more kilometers and wear and tear you put on it. This, in turn, decreases its value. Which means you’ll have less of a trade-in value towards a newer, more practical vehicle. If you aren’t getting what you need out of your car, especially if it’s starting to age, you should sell your vehicle to More Cash For Scrap.

4.Fixing Cosmetic Damaged Yourself

If you’ve got dings and dents all over the place, you may need to consider selling your car. Depending on the severity of the damage in the paint job, the cost to refinish and repaint could be more than your car is worth. Plus, leaving blemishes all over your car promote rusting and paint chipping, which makes selling your car later even harder.

We’ve all been guilty at one point or another of using things like nail polish and house paint to “touch up” any little dings and knicks. Although it looks okay for a short while, it too will become unsightly as it is exposed to the weather. Not only that, nail polish has a tendency to chip worse than paint itself. Unfortunately, this will make it look worse in the long run.

Cash-For-Scrap-Cars-Vancouver

Additionally, it’s not going to prevent rust from forming either, and rust equals more money lost in vehicle value. Most paint shops will be happy to provide you with a free estimate on a new paint job. If they quote you a number that’s larger than your car’s value, it’s time to sell or scrap your car.

5.Your Car is Sitting in Your Driveway, Year After Year

If you’ve got an older vehicle that’s just been taking up valuable space in your driveway, you’ll want to think about selling your car. More often than not, people lose much more value by sitting on an old vehicle, instead of selling it. The longer a vehicle sits (especially outside) the more it depreciates.

Cars Sitting Too Long with Seized Brakes

Things like weather, rodents, pets, and everything in between can affect your vehicle’s worth. Even the potential for vandalization is increased the longer it sits. When riff raff see a vehicle parked for a long time, they assume it’s not being used. This invites them to use it for a place to sleep, or something to simply vandalize.

Common Issues with Chrysler Town & Country

Chrysler has a long list of popular vehicles over the years, but the one at the top of that list has and will probably always be the practical and versatile Town & Country family minivan. From fold away seats that allow extra cargo space, to the roomy interior that makes for road trips with the family much more tolerable, this minivan is a go-to vehicle for many families in Canada and North America.

However, just like anything, these vehicles have had their share of problems. We’ve compiled a list of the most common problems with these vans so that you can easily discern if you should fork out the extra money to get the repairs done to keep it on the road, or if you should scrap it and sell your car to us.

  • Engine Issues – Many consumers have reported multiple types of engine issues with Chrysler vehicles. Anything and everything from the engine shutting off unexpectedly, to the vehicle stalling suddenly, to the vehicle not even being able to start. This prompted many consumers to take their vehicles into the dealerships as much of this was happening at less than 100,000kms, but no recall was ever issued. So, if you’re driving a Chrysler vehicle that is 2013 and older, you may want to consider selling it to a scrap car buyer like us if you are having various engine issues that the dealership won’t cover.
  • Electrical Issues – This issue resulted in various safety issues including the sudden loss of power steering, sudden loss of braking systems, malfunctioning fuel pump relay due to electrical failure, and many other minor electrical malfunctions. Losing power to the power windows is not a big deal, but when you suddenly lose your ABS braking system while you’re on the freeway, this can be a major safety concern for you and your family. It’s vehicles like this that we are not only happy to get off the road, but we are more than happy to pay MORE cash for them to our customers.
  • Ignition Switch Issues – Consumers reported that the ignition switch wouldn’t release the key, or would not allow the driver to turn the key to the off position. So, after parking their vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping center, the owner would try to exit the vehicle, but couldn’t get the key out of the ignition. Some customers even called BCAA to come and assist, but they were unable to assist in getting the customer’s key out of the ignition. This happened with many older models of Chrysler vehicles, but no recall was ever issued. If you are considering buying or selling an older model Chrysler, you may want to make sure that this issue hasn’t affected your car or it could be a tough buy or tough sell.
  • Check Engine Light Not Coming On – When there are known issues with your vehicle’s engine, as there have been historically with older Chrysler vehicles, the last thing you need is the very light that is supposed to warn you of these issues to be defective. Well, that was the case with many Chrysler cars, trucks, and sedans that are 2011 and older. Consumers reported having engine knocking with no warning light coming on, as well as the engine stalling without warning. Even after bringing it to their mechanic who couldn’t read the error codes, but could confirm there was a problem with the engine, the check engine light still would not come on. This eventually made Chrysler issue a recall to have the problem fixed so that their customers weren’t caught off guard when the engine was failing or having other issues.

What Do the ICBC Status Definitions Mean?

Has your car, truck or SUV just been in an accident? Are you trying to determine the status of your vehicle after a collision? Has ICBC changed the status of your car based on a recent accident or claim? Was your vehicle involved in a fire, flood, or crushed by a fallen tree? ICBC status definitions can be tricky to understand. Does a rebuilt status mean you have to rebuild your car before insuring it? What does salvage status mean?

In this article we discuss the various types of vehicle status definition in BC, and what they mean to the value of your car, truck, SUV or van. Thus, helping you discern if it’s better to scrap your car for cash or sell it as a running vehicle.

The 5 Types of ICBC Vehicle Statuses

In British Columbia, and all across Canada, every vehicle is given a status to describe the general state of the vehicle and whether it qualifies to be licensed. Vehicles are given a status so that they can be tracked, although it’s mostly for insurance and resale purposes.

There are five types of ICBC status definitions that can be given to a vehicle:

1.Altered Status

altered-status-ICBC

This status is given to a vehicle that has been significantly modified after its manufacture. The vehicle must pass an ICBC inspection to gain this type of status.

An example of this type of modification would be a vehicle with a suspension height altered by more than 10 cm. Or a one type of vehicle being partially converted to another, or combined with another.

The altered status is also used to describe homemade vehicles to indicate that they have been inspected and are structurally sound. So, even if the modifications seem outrageous, as long as the vehicle meets the safety requirements, ICBC will consider it to be road worthy.

2.Normal Status

When a vehicle doesn’t have an assigned ICBC status of rebuilt, salvage, non-repairable or altered, it is considered to have a “normal” status. It simply means that nothing has affected the vehicle’s current state whatsoever, be it an accident, fire, flood, or any sort of modifications.

The designation of “normal status” is a term used for the purposes of vehicle registration. A normal status does not mean the vehicle has never been damaged or is in good mechanical condition, it simply means that nothing that has potentially happen to the car affects its ability to drive and operate as it once did. A brand new car naturally has a normal status.

3.Rebuilt Status

The rebuilt status is essentially an upgrade from the salvage status. Once a salvage vehicle is repaired and passes its inspection, it is given the rebuilt status.

This is where many vehicle we purchase fall into because they’ve been involved in accidents, and have been rebuilt to get back on the road.

There’s nothing wrong with owning a rebuilt vehicle. You just need to be mindful that with anything that gets rebuilt, the potential for future problems is much higher. It’s not because the craftmanship is subpar, it’s because it will never be as structurally sound as it was before the accident.

This title is often applied to vehicles that have been involved in floods, fires, and fallen trees or other falling objects. The vehicle itself is still in running condition prior to the accident, but needs repairs due to crushing, burning, or being severely water-logged.

4.Salvage Status

The status of salvage is given to a vehicle that has been written off in an accidental loss, but has the potential to be repaired or reconstructed. The vehicle must be repaired and inspected before it can be licensed or reinsured. Also, there are key components that can impact ICBC’s decision to assign this title.

Things like a bent frame can typically result in a write-off, but in some cases, depending on the severity, can be considered salvage. A great amount of work would need to be done to get these vehicles back on the road, and often times the owner doesn’t want to invest that much on an older vehicle. That’s where the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap comes in handy.

We buy vehicles in any condition, with ANY prior history; even an accident or total loss. We know the true value in the cars we scrap, so when you use our scrap car removal services, you’ll always get MORE cash for scrap cars in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

5.Non-Repairable

This status is given to a vehicle that has been written off or otherwise totally decommissioned. Also, it cannot be repaired due to structural or safety impairment, and can never be re-licensed or insured. A non-repairable vehicle may be used only for spare parts or scrap. These are the cars we buy a lot of.
