Chevy is 112 Years Old Today!

On November 3, 1911, the world was introduced to the Chevrolet Motor Company which was founded by William Durant and Louis Chevrolet. Though they didn’t release their first vehicle until the following year, many great ideas and constructions were in the works. Like the first Chevrolet Flint.

The Flint was released in 1912 and sold for $2,500, which was a considerable amount of money at the time. If we calculate the inflation rate of $2,500 to 2023, the vehicle’s price would be the equivalent of $79, 130. Most vehicles these days don’t come close to the price.

In 1914, Chevrolet released the Royal Mail Roadster on the market for a much more reasonable price of just $750. It was then that sales of the world’s first Chevrolets began to truly take off.

This was after Louis Chevrolet had a disagreement about what kind of vehicles he and William Durant should produce. He ended up selling his part of the company and returned to racing instead.

Chevrolet Becomes Part of General Motors

A little less than 7 years after the Chevrolet Motor Company was founded, the company then became a part of the General Motors Company. And although the merger was to be a great one, it didn’t start out so easily.

Before joining GM again (yes, again) William Durant had actually founded the company 10 years earlier. Although he was the founder, his wild spending habits and poor money management skills resulted in the other board members firing him from the company.

Although Durant was fired from General Motors, he would later go on to become president of the company in 1916 by purchasing a controlling share of the business. It was then that he merged Chevrolet into General Motors as its own division.

Most Common Problems with Chevrolet Cars, Trucks, & SUVs

While Chevrolet has been one of the longest running car brands in history, much like anything, it doesn’t come flawlessly. Even the best car designers and engineers in the world still produce vehicles that have problems.

This is mainly because you don’t know how well something works until it has stood the test of time and everyday use. Also, when you mass produce anything, quality usually takes a bit of a hit.

That’s why companies like Chevrolet issue recalls when they are alerted to repeated vehicle issues through public consumer reports. Here are some of the most common problems with Chevrolet vehicles to watch out for.

  • Air conditioning problems
  • Rough shifting and slipping gears
  • Ignition key that sticks
  • Fuel pump failure
  • Fast oil consumption/burning
  • Surges and jerks from transmission issues
  • Sudden low beam headlight failure

These are just a few of the issues known to happen to the Chevrolet brand of vehicles on the whole. But there are many, many more that have been reported. Check your VIN # to see if there are any current recalls that you have not yet been notified about.

Which Chevy Vehicles Have the Most Problems?

junk-car-removal

When you’re searching for a new car, the first thing we often consider is the price. Second, the fuel economy. However, one of the biggest factors many of us fail to consider is what kind of proven history of problems that they may have.

When you own a car, you spend a lot of money and time maintaining it, repairing it when needed, fueling it up, and even on car insurance. The last thing you want is to buy a lemon and have to shell out much more money than you originally were counting on.

That’s why we’ve composed a list of the Chevrolet vehicles that have the most problems reported per model.

1. Chevrolet Cruze

While this fun little sedan took off with great sales after a few years of not so many, it’s fame was short lived. This is because the Chevy Cruze was reported to have a whole host of issues, as well as recalls right along with it.

scrap-car-removal-chevy

In fact, thousands of models were recalled due to an immense fire risk, as well as reported fires.

The Chevy Cruze had one of the worst safety ratings any Chevrolet has ever had due in part to the fire risk it posed on consumers.

2.Chevrolet Volt

If there is one vehicle we highly suggest avoiding, it’s the Chevrolet Volt. We see so many of these come in as scrap cars because they have major electrical issues and much like the Cruze, a very low reliability rating.

After word got out about how unreliable these vehicles were, sales dropped drastically. That’s probably why Chevrolet discontinued the car shortly after its release.

If you own a Chevy Volt that has had transmission issues, electrical problems, or anything else, and want to sell it, talk to our team today. We offer MORE cash for scrap cars than any other scrap car removal companies in the Lower Mainland.

3.Chevrolet Trailblazer

sell-your-car

What started out as an SUV that many of us wanted to own, soon turned into one to avoid. The Chevrolet Trailblazer was based off a truck model and Chevy tried to combine a truck with an SUV. This caused a less than comfortable ride, particularly while driving it off-road, which is what the name suggests it was made for.

Released originally in 2002, the Trailblazer spent 7 years in the automotive market and was discontinued in 2009 due to poor sales, and a long list of consumer reports of a variety of mechanical problems.

4.Chevrolet Aveo

If you’re in the market for a compact sedan that has more reported transmission problems than any other of its class, you’ve come to the right place with the Chevy Aveo.

Your mechanic will probably love you if you buy a used Aveo, but it will be bittersweet. He will probably love the business you’ll bring him with all the repeated trips to the shop.

However, he will probably also dread seeing it come in again because the majority of Chevy Aveo’s that go into the shop hardly ever actually get fixed. Plus, even when one problem is resolved, another one usually presents itself.

Instead of shelling out an arm and a leg on your Chevy Aveo, sell it to More Cash For Scrap. We provide same day scrap car removal, free junk car towing, and MORE cash for scrap cars than any other scrap car buyer in Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley will offer you.

And after your mechanic’s bill, you’ll want to get the most cash you can for your car.

5.Chevrolet Colorado

Colorado was Chevrolet’s answer to rising gas prices and consumers still wanting to drive trucks. Although the Colorado started out strong with decent fuel economy, reasonable handling, and a compact size for what felt like a larger truck, it soon flopped.

That’s because it had a weak engine with lots of reported transmission issues, which combined with a poor towing capacity and other frequent mechanical problems, made this truck more of a headache than a blessing.

Fortunately, we buy MORE than just scrap cars for cash in the Lower Mainland. We also buy scrap trucks, vans, and SUVs. So, if you want to sell your Chevy Colorado due to the mechanical problems you’re experiencing, sell it to More Cash For Scrap. We always pay MORE!

Is Mould in a Car Dangerous?

As a general rule of thumb, exposure to moulds of any kind is typically not a great thing for human health.

And while most are harmless for the most part, they can still cause breathing problems, allergies, and other minor irritations to humans, especially if it’s in your car.

How Bad is Mould in a Car for You?

When you are sitting in a car for hours on end, like many of us do to commute for work, you’re breathing in whatever is inside your vehicle. Regardless of whether or not you change your cabin air filter regularly, or if you keep your fan turned on to circulate, there are pollutants that we are exposed to everywhere around us.

The last thing you want to do is add to that is mould inside your car. So, if you have any minor leaks that you haven’t had fixed or notice that weather stripping is looking a little worn and not fitting the way it used to, you should get your vehicle checked out by a mechanic.

What Causes Mold in Cars?

mouldy-car

One of the things we encounter a lot in older vehicles that people are scrapping is mould. Mould happens from vehicles sitting outside too long, as condensation forms inside and breeds mould and mildew.

Mould also occurs when vehicles have leaks in their weather stripping around the windows, or around the trunk. This can even happen from having cracks in the windows or windshield that was never repaired and has worsened over the years.

Ultimately, the number one cause of mould in cars is exposure to the outdoors for prolonged periods of time, as well as leaks.

If you can park your car indoors more often than not, we highly recommend this to protect your vehicle from ever getting a case of mould. Alternatively, you can use a good quality car cover that’s made to protect vehicles that are parked outside from rain and snow.

Car Mould Caused by Flooding

Although most mould comes from exposure to minor leaks, British Columbia is also famous for frequent rainfall and mass flooding (especially over the past couple of years). So, naturally, many vehicle owners who park their cars outside experienced water damage due to flooding.

Some were covered under insurance, some were not. For many owners, older vehicles were written off by ICBC because the damage caused by the water was so extensive that it cost more to repair the car than replace it.

For those situations and any like it, More Cash For Scrap was able to help. As many consumers didn’t have the proper coverage on their vehicles to cover flood damage, they were left with nothing but a pile of scrap.

Fortunately for them, More Cash For Scrap pays cash for damaged cars. Plus, we offer free towing services, same day scrap car removal, and MORE cash for cars than any other local scrap car buyers in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

What Happens If You Get Mould in Your Car?

To the average person, breathing in mould isn’t a be all end all kind of scenario. But if you suffer from a weakened immune system, have heart conditions, suffer from asthma, COPD, or any other type of breathing disorder, prolonged exposure to mould in your car could cause some serious health problems, including cancer.

Some of the health problems you could experience from mould in your car include:

  • Lung infections
  • Bronchitis
  • Astha
  • Chronic coughing or wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat
  • Sleep apnea
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Skin irritations

Some people also have unknown allergic reactions that form as they get older. This can be the result of long-term mould exposure, or something new that has a sudden onset. Either way, being around mould for extended periods of time will only aggravate whatever allergy or irritation you’re suffering from.

How Do I Know if I Have Mould in My Car?

cash-for-scrap-cars

Mould is pretty easy to spot if you have it, but sometimes it can hide under fabrics like your vehicle’s headliner, your interior carpet, or even inside or around the bottom of your seats.

The most common place you’ll find mould in your car, however, is very close to the source of the moisture. If you know for certain that you have a crack in the upper part of your windshield, and that it’s been there for quite some time, you should look around the source for possible mould.

Usually mould in your car is black, but it can also be green, brown, white, or a sort of rust colour, depending on what kind of other chemicals or fluids it comes into contact with.

How Do I Get Rid of Mould in My Car?

For the majority of us, when we see mould starting to form inside our vehicle, we quickly grab a rag and some spray cleaner and wipe away any evidence of it. But when it comes to properly removing mould from our vehicle, is that really the best way to do it?

Step 1:

To begin with, the first thing you should do before removing mould from your car is make sure that you are properly protected. That means wearing a mask, gloves, and if you have them, goggles. This may sound a bit overkill for the simple removal of mould, but mould is more than just gross, it’s bad for your health.

When you clean up mould with any kind of solvent, you’re spraying mould at the surface. And because mould is comprised of spores, some of those spores get spread into the air after misting.

Step 2:

Prepare your car for cleaning. This means removing any items from the seats, floor, and open console compartments. Be sure to throw away anything that has mould growth on it, or is wet from the source of the mould.

Step 3:

Fill a spray bottle with distilled vinegar or a diluted bleach solution. Both vinegar and bleach are excellent for removing mould from anything and are much less harmful than professional mould cleaning products.

Just be careful when using bleach to clean the mould out of your car because it can damage certain hard surfaces and cause discolouration of nearly every fabric.

Step 4:

Spray directly onto the surfaces and areas with mould, while fully saturating the area. Use a scrub brush with coarse bristles to scrub the affected area. Scrub until no further evidence of mould remains.

You may notice some permanent staining caused by the mould, depending on the length of time it was there. As long as you’ve neutralized the mouldy areas as much as possible with the cleaner, it should be fine going forward.

Step 5:

Dry your car out thoroughly after cleaning and removing the mould from the interior. Also, ensure that any leaks which caused the mould to form are properly repaired. Any leaky seals or weather stripping should also be replaced.

Use a fan to dry the inside of your car, but also leave your windows open slightly to help air dry all fabrics inside the car. If you park outdoors, be sure you do this on a warm sunny day. If you have a private garage, try using a space heater to help expedite the drying process.
